2017 Big 12 Tournament Preview
Big 12 Tournament
Location: Spring Center (Kansas City)
Dates: Wednesday, March 8 through Saturday, March 11
TV Info: Games on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU (Championship game on ESPN)
Last year’s champion: Kansas
The Favorite: When you win 13 regular season titles in a row, you’re going to be the favorite heading into a conference tournament. With Kansas being the “home” team just 40 minutes away from Lawrence, the Jayhawks should remain the favorites after winning the Big 12 by four games.
The Storylines: Like the Big East, the Big 12 has a chance to send 70% of its conference to the NCAA Tournament. Unlike the Big East, the Big 12 might have three or four legitimate national title contenders from the conference. Kansas and Baylor are two teams in the KenPom top 11, both of whom have a Top 30 KenPom offensive and defensive rating. If West Virginia can force turnovers with their pressing defense, they too could make a run in the tournament. As we discussed in BSL’s Pre NCAA Tournament Q&A, Oklahoma State will be a dark horse favorite with its best offense in the country according to KenPom.
Bubble Talk: The Big 12 looks to have six teams safely in the tournament. The biggest question is Kansas State who faces off against potential-2-seed Baylor. If the Wildcats defeat the Bears in the Big 12 quarterfinals (which they already did at Baylor earlier this season), I think they would be safely in with other key victories over West Virginia and Oklahoma State. Texas Tech, TCU or Texas would have to win the league to go dancing.
Prediction: #1 Kansas over #3 Baylor
