The University of Maryland improved to 12-4 overall, and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 61-50 victory over Georgia Tech.

The Good:

1) Pankey asked for the ball, and scored, tying the game at 7 early on.

2) Stoglin’s first shot attempt game with roughly 13 minutes to go in the 1st half, but his offense was certainly not limited. He gave the Terps the early 12-10 lead when he hit a step-back 3. Stoglin put the Terps up 8, with 17 minutes left in the 2nd half with a 4 point play. Stoglin finished with 14 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, and a steal.

3) One of the keys going into this game was what MD was going to be able to do defensively against Glenn Rice Jr. Rice had 28 against Duke, and 22 against NCST, but was limited to 6 points today. Parker, Mosley, and Faust each had some good moments against the Georgia Tech Junior.

4) Beautiful back-door pass from Mosley to Faust. Faust was able to make cut coming off a strong screen from Len.

5) Good defensive possession from the Terps with about 3 1/2 minutes left in the 1st half. Len had a block, and when Georgia Tech retained possession, Mosley was able to take the charge.

6) The Terps ended the 1st half on a 6-0 run. This was punctuated with Faust getting the steal, and throwing down an emphatic dunk as time expired. In the 2nd half, Faust had a nice step back jumper, and followed that with another break away slam to put MD up 12 with 11 minutes to play. Faust’s 3rd steal came with him as a help defender, when he just ripped the ball away from a Georgia Tech big.

7) After hitting a 3 of his own, Mosley did a good job of driving and finding Stoglin for an open 3. With about 4 minutes remaining, Mosley had another drive and dish, this time to Padgett.

8) The Terps went up by 10 with Howard finishing on an up an under. It was interesting hearing that Coach Turgeon wants Howard to up his scoring to 10 points per game. Howard had 5 points, and 4 boards.

9) Len’s size was a distraction for Georgia Tech the entire game. Len did a great job running the court, and being a factor defensively and as a rebounder. He finished with 8 boards, and 3 blocks.

10) Padgett had 14 points, and 9 boards. He was 6 of 7 from the foul-line, and 7 of his rebounds were on the offensive end.

11) Maryland was 19 of 23 from the foul line.

12) Mosley hit all 10 of his FT attempts, and finished with 18 points, 5 boards, 2 assists, and a steal.

The Bad:

1) I liked seeing Faust attempt to post up a smaller defender, but instead of backing him down, Faust turned and shot a fade away jumper from 12 feet away, which he probably missed by 5 feet or more.

2) Padgett often appears to have the mindset that he is going to take a shot no matter what. He does well when he is just reacting, and going up aggressively. He struggles when a play is run for him.

3) On several defensive switches, Len found himself defending smaller guards out at the top of the key.
3a) After having at-least 12 points in each of his initial 4 games, Len has scored a total of 5 points in these past two games.

4) We’ve seen it in a few recent games, and saw it again today; MD appears uncomfortable when they start to build a lead.

5) The Terps were up 6 with under 5 minutes to play, when Stoglin forced a quick 3 point shot, which was air balled.

6) Howard had 5 turnovers and just 1 assist.

The Ugly:

1) I believe MD has yet to start the new semester, but I was amazed by the amount of empty seats for a conference opponent.
