The University of Maryland improved to 15-10 overall, and 5-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 81-65 spanking of Boston College. The Terrapins took complete control of the game, with a 25-2 run in the first half. During that larger run, Stoglin had a 14-0 scoring spree of his own.

The Good:

1) The first Terps points of the night came when Len found Weijs with a good look inside. On the next offensive set, Len attacked a double-team and threw down a hard dunk. A Len block started a MD fast-break that put the Terps up 37-22. Len finished with 9 boards, and 3 blocks.

2) He almost got caught in the air, but Faust was able to drive the lane and find Stoglin in the corner for 3. Faust’s first basket was a 3 of his own. The Freshman made a nice interior pass finding Weijs for two. Faust followed a bad turnover with a good defensive play to get the ball back. Faust got the Terps on the board in the 2nd half with a layup, as he curled around the screen. Late in the game he had an over the shoulder pass to Padgett, followed by a huge 1 handed dunk. Faust finished with 14 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals.

3) After Faust found him in the corner for his initial points, Stoglin quickly followed that up with a short jumper in the lane, and three more 3’s. This was a 14-0 Stoglin run, giving MD an 18-10 lead. Each of those 14 points came in a 2 minute 45 second span. Stoglin put the Terps back up 14 with his fifth 3 of the of the half. Stoglin was 9 of 16 from the floor (5 of 8 from 3) as he finished with 24 points.

4) Following a hard foul on a defensive rebound, Parker got his first points of the game on a 3. Up 50-37, Parker used his athleticism and hustle for a block. Parker got to the ground to secure the ball. His last points came on an alley-oop in the last minute. Parker had 7 points, and 6 boards.
4a) On the same defensive possession as Parker’s block, Weijs followed with one of his own. Several plays later he added another.

5) Mosley got into the 3 point barrage with a jumper that put the Terps up 15. After taking the ball away from BC on the glass, he looked up ahead finding Pankey for two. Mosley ended an 8-0 BC run with a jumper in the lane. He used good positioning to go up strong on a layup that put MD up 17 (56-39). Mosley had 13 points, 4 boards, and 3 assists.

6) Maryland went up 29-12 with just under 10 minutes remaining, when Padgett made a good defensive play and found Faust for the layup. This capped a 25-2 run, which elapsed just over 6 and 1/2 minutes. Padgett powered home a layup, and converted at the line to put the Terps back up 14 at 47-33. As Len put the ball on the ground going to the rim, Padgett scooped the ball up and scored. Working back to the basket, he scored on a close jump hook. Scoring all of his points in the 2nd half, Padgett finished with 15 points, and 8 boards. He was 5 of 6 from the line.

7) I point out below that I was not pleased with how the Terps began the 2nd half, but I was ecstatic by how MD answered that 6-0 BC run. The Terrapins immediately pushed the lead back to 15.

8) Maryland was 8 of 16 from 3 point land, and 17 of 22 from the foul line. The Terps had 8 blocks, and held BC to 33% shooting from the floor. Overall good defense from MD tonight.

The Bad:

1) Maryland attempted to go inside on their initial possession, and Pankey turned it over when the double-team came. On their second offensive set, they turned it over again.

2) A missed Mosley 3, led to a Boston College fast-break and a 3 from the Eagles. MD was out of position to corral Mosley’s miss, and did not hustle back down the court.

3) Faust had a bad turnover, trying to force the ball into Len from the wing. In the middle of the 2nd half, he had back to back possessions when he turned the ball over, and shot a 3 falling away from the basket. Faust had 5 turnovers overall, and was just 4 of 12 from the floor.

4) Up 33-14, MD allowed a 8-0 Boston College run.

5) The Terps started the 2nd half with an ugly turnover, followed by an layup that got nothing but air from Pankey.

6) Mosley got called for a push off, but he was out of sorts when Len failed to capture position in the blocks. As they went back down the court, Len failed to body Clifford, who got an easy dunk.

7) Maryland began the 2nd half up 14, BC was able to pull back within single digits with a 6-0 run over the first two minutes. All of half-time had to be spent with Coach Turgeon talking about coming out strong and delivering a knock out punch, instead you let the Eagles right back into the game.
7a) MD was up 60-43 with 9mts+ left in the game. With just under 3 minutes left, BC had used a 13-5 run to again give themselves a chance.

8) It did not show in the turnovers, but MD had a lot of sloppy ball handling. Lots of Terps players were clearly missing Howard having the ball in his hands.

9) Stoglin did not score in the 2nd half, until there was under 6 minutes left. Looking at his line, he had 1 assist, 0 steals, and 2 boards.

The Ugly:

1) Maryland was up 17 (58-41) when Pankey was called for a technical. Later Faust was called for a contact technical foul. Neither wound-up costing the Terps, but these types of plays can allow teams to eat back into deficits.

2) BC entered today 327th Nationally in rebounds, but played fairly even with the Terps on the boards most of the game. (Maryland 36, BC 29)

3) Again, way too many empty seats for a conference opponent.

Up-Next:

The Terps will attempt to get back to .500 in conference play Saturday, when they visit #22 Virginia.
