Playing one of their most complete games of the season, the University of Maryland rolled past Wake Forest in the opening game of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. With the 82-60 win, the Terrapins improve to 17-14 overall, and 7-10 in the ACC. The Terps have now earned the opportunity to face the Tar Heels of North Carolina for the 3rd time this season.

The Good:

1) Mosley got MD on the board with a jumper. Going left, and spinning back to his right; Mosley hit a short jumper. Seconds later he delivered a great look to Faust, which gave MD a 21 point (61-40) lead. Mosley had 6 points, 6 boards, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

2) Padgett did a good job following a Mosley miss. He went up strong again to pull MD within 3 at 26-23. The Forward got possession back for the Terps with an offensive board on a missed Faust FT. He followed a Len miss, with a big slam. Padgett had 10 points and 5 boards.

3) Pushing the ball up the court, Faust started his scoring with a jumper at the foul line. Flashing his improved shooting, Faust buried a 3 shortly thereafter. Getting out in the open floor, Faust finished with a beautiful layup to give MD the 32-28 lead. He had a terrific one-handed pass to Len underneath for a slam. Faust had 19 points, and 5 boards.

4) Rewarded for running the court, Len scored his 2nd basket with a big slam down the middle of the lane. Up 18-15, Len held position and had his 2nd block of the game. Len had another nice block (this time on McKie) in the 2nd half. Len had 7 points, 6 boards, and 3 blocks.

5) Maryland was up 12-7 through the first time, nice job by the Terps getting off to a good start. They also ended the half well, with a 15-5 run.

6) Jonathan Thomas came in and contributed with not only some minutes, but with a 3. Later in the 1st half, Thomas jumped a lazy pass from Wake, and stole the ball.

7) With 3 points the old-fashioned way, Stoglin put the Terps up 21-19. A Stoglin steal and layup gave the Terps a 1 point lead (27-26). Driving, pushing, and dishing; Stoglin found Mosley for a layup to put MD up 2 (30-28). An excellent back-door pass from Stoglin to Faust, put MD up 40-33. Stoglin pushed the lead to 49-33, after burying two 3’s, and 3 shots at the line.  He buried another 3 to put MD up 24 (64-40). Stoglin had 25 points, 7 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals. He was 8 of 14 from the floor, and hit all 6 of his foul shots.

8) At the 5:04 mark of the 1st half, Parker got up off the floor for an offensive board, and quickly went up again for the put-back. This pulled MD within 1 at 26-25. He was called for the foul, but Parker showed good hustle getting back for a block with MD up 26. He delivered a good look to Weijs down low. Parker finished with 3 assists.

9) Pankey backed down his defender, and showed off his little jump hook, for two in the 2nd half. Later he set a nice physical screen. He had a layup on a good aggressive move. Pankey had 6 points, and 2 boards.

10) Weijs had a good block late in the 2nd half.

11) Maryland grew enough of a lead, that they were able to limit minutes to their starters. Even better, they were able to maintain the lead with their reserves.

12) Maryland dominated Wake on the boards (36-20), and had 18 assists.

The Bad:

1) Len delivered a nice pass inside to Padgett to start the game, but Padgett was not able to finish.

2) Parker came into the game, and immediately put up a 3 which was missed.Would have liked to have seen him get into the flow of the game first.

3) The offense was playing well to start the game, but the defense was allowing too many easy shots. At the 10 minute mark, Wake was up 19-18 having made 9 of their first 17 shots.

4) Out of control, Pankey picked up his 2nd foul on pump-fake.

5) Wake Forest went up 26-21, when Weijs did not get out on McKie. McKie’s 3 capped a 19-7 Demon Deacons run.

6) Faust turned the ball over to end the half, as the Terps failed to get a shot off. With MD up 17 in the 2nd half, Faust missed a slam. Never got a real handle on the ball.

7) Trying to make a play up the court, Stoglin threw the ball out of bounds.

The Ugly:

None. This was a pretty complete performance from Maryland. They did not just ‘survive and advance,’ they played well.
