It was a rain-shortened week for all the affiliates except Norfolk. Delmarva did not play for three days straight.

Position Player of the Week: Christian Walker – 1B

Walker has been on fire for the entire season. He had no right starting the year at Delmarva, and is proving that with his play in Frederick. I stated many times how Walker has displayed an advanced approach at the plate. He lays off close pitches and has strong pitch recognition for the A+ level. I have to give him credit, the bat has been better than I originally anticipated. I am glad to have been wrong on that. He is displaying some of that power which had been lacking, although he may still end up being a better fit away from 1B. Walker is having a fine season, and he deserves to garner some recognition for that – even if he is a college-mold player that SHOULD be hitting like this.

Starting Pitcher of the Week: Josh Hader – LHP

1 GS, 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB 6 K (A)
The wiry lefty tossed another gem. While he still needs to work on command (typical for a 19 year old pitcher), he has shown that his stuff is legitimate. He has a good fastball for a LHP, which has some life and deception on it. I talked to a scout about Hader and he said that his development has been quite the buzz around the SALLY. He did mention that some question whether the arm slot works, but for now lets be excited for the young lefty. He has been excellent and is quickly moving himself up the ladder. Apologies to Eduardo Rodriguez and Tim Berry, whom also tossed some gems this week.

Relief Pitcher of the Week: Ashur Tolliver – LHP

1 G, 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K (AA)
Now you may look at his line and wonder “is that really worth being the player of the week?” Well, when you haven’t pitched in two years, it certainly is a huge success to throw two scoreless in your first official appearance back. Tolliver is a solid arm that has been tarnished by some injuries. He used to throw 90-94 on the regular and could pop 96. I have heard that some of that arm strength is finally back, and he is definitely a guy to keep an eye on. Remember, he was already excelling at Frederick before these injuries derailed him.
