With the Sherrill trade bringing back Josh Bell, and Steven Johnson, it is a good time to revise the O’s Top Prospect List. Chris Tillman will not be included due to his recent promotion to Baltimore.

1) Brian Matusz
2) Brandon Snyder
3) Jake Arrieta
4) Josh Bell
5) Troy Patton
6) Matt Hobgood
7) Brandon Erbe
8) Zack Britton
9) Caleb Joseph
10) Steven Johnson
11) Billy Rowell
12) Mychel Givens (not signed)
13) Xaiver Avery
14) Richard Zagone
15) Chorye Spoone
16) Jerome Hoes
17) Tim Bascom
18) Brandon Waring
19) Luis Noel
20) Robert Bundy
21) Pedro Beato
22) Matt Angle
23) Justin Turner
24) Blake Davis
25) Pedro Florimon
26) Tony Butler (GCL)
27) W. Perez (injured)

Notes:

– Givens needs to be signed
– Spoone is back pitching for the Gulf Coast O’s. If he does not have further set-backs, and has another Winter of rehab, he could be back in AA in 2010.
– Hoes is just 19, and plenty talented – but he has a .602 OPS for Delmarva. Has to work on plate-discipline.
– Bascom has made 7 starts at Bowie, 6 of which have been effective. He could follow a path similar to Berken.
– Noel has had a lost year of development. Was strong for Delmarva in ’08, but VISA issues prevented him from coming to the US in ’09. He is in the Dominican Summer League.
– Beato turns 23 in Oct, maybe he should be converted to closer.
– Angle turns 24 in Sept, OPS under .700, 32 steals, needs to finish strong.
– Turner turns 25 in Nov, .310 avg, .762 OPS at AAA, has reached point where he could fill in for Roberts, if Roberts was ever on the DL.
– Butler has just returned to pitching for the Gulf Coast O’s. If he stays healthy, he can move.

Beyond that Prospect List, I think there should also be a ‘Help‘ list. I would define the ‘Help‘ list as players who I really do not think belong on the Prospect List, but who have the chance to help you situationally as an Organization. To start 2009, Oscar Salazar would have been the perfect definition of such a player.

Here is my Top 10 Oriole ‘Help‘ List:

1) Fiorentino
2) Liz
3) Miller
4) Hoey
5) Aubrey
6) Pauley
7) Waters
8) Diaz
9) McCrory
10) J.Cabrera
