ESPN’s Andy Katz is reporting the ACC Coaches will be meeting today, through Tuesday at Amelia Island, FL with an 18 game season, and two division format on the table for the 2011-12 season.

University of Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams had previously expressed non-interest in such a format, but this is one time where I will disagree with Coach Williams.

This past-season, MD beat the regular-season champions of the Patriot League (American) and the American East Conference (Vermont)… both were Top 100 RPI wins… but as Selection Sunday neared, neither victory was viewed as a ‘good’ win.

Similarly, MD lost a 13 point lead to Morgan… and lost by 1 at-home. Whenever bracketologists argued that MD did not belong in the dance, the 1 point loss to Morgan was regularly brought-up.

It did not matter that Morgan had been in the NIT the year prior, did not matter that Morgan was the Champion of the MEAC Conference… did not matter that Morgan was coached by an accomplished coach in Bozeman, or led by a former Pac-10 Freshman of the Year player…. did not matter that Morgan’s RPI was basically equal to the lowest ranked ACC team in GaTech.

I agree with the general idea that MD should never lose to a MEAC team… even the best… but if you do not get any credit for the win… and it is apocolypse now if you lose; what is the benefit of the playing the game?

Better to play two extra games against ACC teams… have an RPI that much higher, and make sure that all ACC teams are playing the same home and away schedule.
