Maryland’s stay in Atlanta for the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament has come to a close, with a 85-69 loss to North Carolina.

The Good:

1) Len started the game with a block on Bullock. At the 11 minute mark, he got a block on Zeller.

2) After several bad offensive possessions to start the game, Stoglin got Maryland on the board with a short jumper. A Stoglin 3 kept MD within striking distance (20-13 UNC lead). He inched MD closer (22-17), with another shot from outside. Following a 6-0 UNC run, Stoglin got Bullock to foul him on a 3pt attempt. Stoglin had 30 points, and 2 steals. Stoglin was 11 of 21 from the floor, including 5 of 11 from 3.

3) Mosley hit an early jumper.Taking the ball to the rim, he forced a UNC foul, and got to the line. Hitting 1 of 2, made it a 6 point (32-26) game. He was 6 for 8 from the foul line, and had 6 boards.

4) Faust was able to pick up a foul, when he pushed the ball in transition, and forced the issue. He pulled MD within 4 (12-8), with a 3. Again pushing the ball, he got MD within 3 at 22-19. Down 13 (49-36), Faust did a good job of drawing the defense and getting the ball to Mosley (who was fouled hard). Faust had 11 points, and 4 boards.

5) At around the 13 minute mark of the 1st half, Pankey came up with good defensive rebounds on back-to-back possessions. At the 11 minute mark, he had a nice block on Hairston, and another big board. He hit a short jumper at the 13 minute mark of the 2nd half, to make it a 7 point game (52-45). Grabbing a missed shot by Stoglin, Pankey scored and was fouled. Pankey had 7 points, 8 boards, and a block. Really nice effort today from him.

6) Parker came in and was playing with good energy. He got called for the charge, but at-least was aggressive going to the rim. Several minutes left he had a nice block on Bullock in help defense. At the 6 minute mark he forced a jump ball, when he got to floor battling for possession. He hit a 3, pulling MD within 7 at 32-25. Parker finally got the Terps on the board to start the 2nd half, with 3 points the old-fashioned way. He had a nice drive and dish to Pankey. Parker had 8 points, 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. He provided some good defense on Barnes.

7) When Zeller was tagged with the flagrant vs. Mosley, MD made the most of it. Mosley converted his two foul shots, and Faust hit an intermediate jumper.

The Bad:

1) On Maryland’s first offensive possession, Len missed an open layup. Down 20-14, Len was not sure he wanted to take a charge, and fouled Hairston, who converted his shot.

2) The following three possessions were not any better, with a Faust turnover, Padgett getting trapped under the rim, and Len taking to long to get off another shot.

3) After hitting a 3 on the previous time down, Faust forced another one which was was missed. With about 4:30 left, Faust was called for a charge, which you could see developing before he made an offensive move. Faust had 3 turnovers.

4) UNC came out hitting 6 of their first 10 shots, and finished hitting over 50% of their attempts for the game.

5) The Terps were not able to secure a John Henson missed FT, and Bullock made MD pay with a 3 making it a 10 point game (18-8).

6) Down 8 with just over a minute left in the half, and Padgett missed two foul-shots. Getting the rebound, MD found Stoglin, who missed an open 3. With UNC now up 10, MD had the opportunity to take the last shot of the half. Stoglin was not able to beat his defender, and settled for a long-jumper a foot inside the line.

7) In the first half, MD was 8 of 26 from the floor. The Terrapins attempted 12 3point shots, and were just 6 of 11 from the foul line. For the game, the Terps finished 24 of 62, 8 of 24 from 3, and 13 of 21 from the FT line.
7a) Down 16 in the 2nd half, Mosley missed a shot from about 4ft that he should have converted. Poor shooting game for Mosley overall, with the Senior going 2 of 11 from the floor, and 0 of 5 from 3.

8) Parker had 4 turnovers.

9) Down 10 at the break, UNC stretched their lead to 16 scoring the first 6 points of the 2nd half. MD attempted to get Len, and Padgett involved and both missed. Faust missed a layup, when he never quite had possession.

10) MD was on a nice little run to get back in the game (54-47 UNC), when Padgett threw the ball away. Barnes went right down the court to score.

11) UNC had taken their 10 point half-time lead, and pushed it to 17. Maryland answered and got the lead down to 7 (54-47). UNC answered that by pushing the lead right back to 16 (64-47).

The Ugly:

1) On UNC’s 2nd 3pointer to start the 2nd half, the Raycom announcers were saying that Stoglin had been shaking his head at not being more involved with the offense, and backed off of Bullock on the shot.

2) UNC’s Front-court dominated MD’s Front-court. This was with Henson only playing 7 minutes in the first half.
2a) I thought Padgett and Len needed to combine for around 20 and 20, for MD to have a real chance to day. They combined to go 0 for 7 form the floor, 0 points, 4 boards, and 2 blocks.
