The Terps were murdered last-night in Berkley, 52-13.

I did not expect MD to travel across the country and beat a team that is seen as legit Pac-10, and National Title contender.

However, it is unacceptable for Maryland to lose by 39 points to anyone.

In the end, the analysis is simple. Maryland’s patch-work offensive line was not good enough to keep Turner up-right against a talented defense. With Turner sacked 6 times, and harassed the entire night, the passing game was not able to accomplish anything. Beyond that, Scott had 90 yards rushing, but was never able to get into a consistent groove.

For me, this game reminded me of another Opening Week embarrassment.

In 2002, MD opened the season against Notre Dame in the Meadowlands, and were blanked 22-0. That team, came back to lay the wood to Akron in Week 2, before getting blown out by Florida State in Week 3. After that, that Terp team would win 10 of their last 11 games (aside from a 48-13 blow-out to UVA) inclusive of beating Tennessee in the Peach Bowl.

Can this 2009 MD Terp team have a similar season?

The skill position talent is there to recover, but only if the Offensive-line is addressed immediately. I understand the Terps did not want to burn Pete White’s Red-shirt, and that he had his own troubles in camp picking up the system. That said, I have trouble believing that the two former walk-on players on the right-side (Gonnella, Pinegar) are better options. On the left-side, if Bruce Campbell does not reach his physical potential and dominate; it is going to be very tough for MD.

Next-up for Maryland is James Madison, who is ranked 8th overall in the Football Championship Sub-division (1AA).
