Brett Kulka is another sleeper recruit signed by Randy Edsall and his staff. Over the past few years, they have proven to be good at grabbing recruits who are under other people’s radars. While just a borderline 3-star recruit, Kulka certainly has upside. He projects to be a defensive end in Brian Stewart’s 3-4 system, and would likely play on the strong side due to his quickness. The team has a few defensive ends already in place, so Kulka wouldn’t be expected to contribute until later in his college career. But that doesn’t mean he couldn’t see early playing time on special teams.

He was a standout at General McLane High School, both on the football field and on the basketball court. He committed to Maryland right after a two-day visit to College Park where he met heavily with then-defensive line coach Greg Gattuso and tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator John Dunn. He also spoke to Randy Edsall about Blidi Wreh-Wilson, an extremely talented defensive back who was recruited by Edsall out of General McLane in 2007. Again, Wreh-Wilson was an underrated 2-star recruit who propelled himself into an NFL Draft choice in 2013.

There doesn’t seem to be too much of a change in Kulka’s commitment now that Greg Gattuso has departed for Akron. He seems committed to Maryland and Chad Wilt, which is a good sign for Randy Edsall and his staff.
