Shane Cockerille was one of the Terps’ first commits in the class of 2013. On a visit to College Park in April, he was ready to commit on the spot. This naturally made Randy Edsall extremely happy, and all of College Park has been buzzing about the future of Shane Cockerille at the University of Maryland.
Cockerille, as seen in the rankings above, is a true dual-threat quarterback. He is a guy who can evade defenders, but also power through them. He is also a left-handed passer, which should remind a lot of people of Tim Tebow. He excelled as the quarterback for the Gilman School, and led his team to the MIAA Championsip Game this year. They won that game against Calvert Hall, and took home the MIAA Championship for the 2nd year in a row.
In the offseason, Cockerille was named one of ESPN‘s “Elite 11″ quarterbacks, an honor given to the Top 11 high school signal-callers in the nation. He beat out a group of other high school quarterbacks for this honor via his impressive showings at multiple combines and events. Gilman defensive coordinator and former Baltimore Colt linebacker Stan White said before the 2012 high school football season that Cockerille “is a lot more mature now. He understands what he wants to do and where he wants to go.”
Cockerille describes committing to Maryland as a “dream come true”. Maryland has an interesting situation on their hands with Cockerille in 2013. Due to the plethora of quarterbacks already at Maryland, they may opt to redshirt him and have him start for the Terps’ first 4 full years in the Big Ten Conference. Or they could simply start him right out of the gate. Either way, we will be seeing an extremely talented young man play for the Maryland Terrapins for 4 years. Whether that begins in 2013 or 2014 is yet to be seen, but there is no doubt that Shane Cockerille will shine as the starting quarterback for your Maryland Terrapins.
