What’s in a name? For Will Likely III, his name has been the topic of many light-hearted jokes around college football recruiting over the past few months. A common headline would read, “Will Likely will likely commit to Maryland”. In fact, Ben Broman of Testudo Times wrote a very funny article about Likely’s commitment with all kinds of jokes on Likely’s name.
But Likely’s name isn’t the only reason people have been paying attention to him. He is a 4-star cornerback with great instincts and ball skills all packed into a 5’7″ frame. Some would say that he’s undersized, but he has learned to work well within his body, even if he may be smaller than some defensive backs.
Likely described Florida State as his “dream school” during recruiting. Luckily for Maryland, the Seminoles never made an offer to Likely, allowing the Terps to swoop in and grab the Florida native. One of the best things about him is the fact that he graduated from high school in December, allowing him to participate in the Terps’ spring practice. He is the only incoming freshman that will participate in early practices. Junior college recruits Deon Long and Silvano Altamirano will also participate in spring camp.
Will Likely will compete for playing time as a backup cornerback with Isaac Goins, Alvin Hill, A.J. Hendy, and Jarrett Ross. While Goins will be the primary backup, Likely will see playing time as a freshman. His biggest chunk of playing time will come next season, as Dexter McDougle and Isaac Goins graduate. At that time, he will most likely start alongside Jeremiah Johnson. Two other things of note is that Will Likely was named to ESPN‘s “Gridiron Kings” and “The Opening” teams. These are honors given out to top recruits in the country.
