Baltimore lost to DC 5-4 yesterday in Grapefruit league action.

Alfredo Simon pitched 4 innings, allowing 1 hit, 0er, and 3 k’s.

Obviously a very effective outing, and combined with what the O’s saw in his 13 innings to end 2008, and his performance in Winter Ball this year… Simon has opened eyes.

I have to ask though, why the O’s are allowing their eyes to be opened?

Simon turns 28 years old in May.
The last time Simon consistently produced, was at High A ball in 2004.

If the O’s want to cut Baez, and Walker; and carry Simon as a 13th member of the staff…. I would not support that, but I could understand it.
Giving him extended innings over guys like Penn, Albers, and Liz who are younger, and have achieved more at higher leagues is a hard strategy to support.

Yesterday, Liz and Penn both pitched 1 inning each… Liz allowed a walk and no hits, Penn allowed a walk, 2 hits including a HR. Them limiting Penn to 1 inning yesterday has to make you wonder if they are no longer considering Penn for the rotation. Effective or not, he is 24 years old and has major success at the AA, and AAA levels. Giving up on his arm would be a mistake.

Nolan Reimold hit his 4th HR of the Spring, had another hit, and drew a walk. For the Spring, Reimold is batting 321.
Chris Gomez was 0-3, with 2 k’s and saw his avg lowered to 083.
