The Maryland Terrapins’ first Big Ten Conference game went about as well as most people could have hoped. Brian Stewart’s defense stifled the potent attack of the Indiana Hoosiers, and Mike Locksley’s offense was able to overcome an injury to C.J. Brown and rack up 37 points. After an impressive win at Syracuse last week, Randy Edsall’s squad put up another impressive win this afternoon. This keeps Maryland’s road record perfect since their loss at Wake Forest last season. So what did we learn from this Maryland win today?

  • This team likes the road – Ever since their big overtime win over Virginia Tech in Blacksburg last season, the Terps have felt much more comfortable on the road. So far this season, they hold a 3-0 record away from College Park.
  • Caleb Rowe has talent – The offense certainly changes when Caleb Rowe is in the game, but he showed plenty of arm talent this afternoon. C.J. Brown suffered an injury to his left wrist, but fans shouldn’t be too worried about Rowe’s ability to lead the offense.
  • Deon Long, NFL prospect – Deon Long showed a lot to everyone watching today. He caught nearly every ball in his reach and spent the afternoon making defenders miss right and left. He has become more consistent as this season has moved along, and has to be making some noise with the NFL scouts.
  • Penalties, no turnovers – The Terps and the Hoosiers were both riddled with turnovers, but Maryland committed zero turnovers for the second week in a row. Randy Edsall has to be happy with this team’s ball security after an unstable start to the season.
  • Next Man Up – Randy Edsall has fully embraced the “Next Man Up” philosophy from the moment he stepped foot in College Park. With all the team’s injuries over the years, he’s had plenty of time to implement this with his team. Though the Maryland defense was missing many players due to injuries, they held a very potent Indiana offense to just 15 points.
  • NFL Scouts, meet Cole Farrand – Cole Farrand may not be the flashiest linebacker in college football, but he’s certainly one of the hardest-working. He is finally fully healthy, and was seen flying all over the field making solid tackles. He is a huge part of Brian Stewart’s defense.
  • Offensive line still needs improvement – While the offensive line is certainly playing better than they had been early in the season, they still have some work to do before they play the likes of Ohio State’s defense. C.J. Brown and Caleb Rowe were still under a lot of pressure from 4 and 5-man rushes and there were very few holes for the Maryland running backs to run through.
  • William Likely is a beast – While Cole Farrand made the biggest defensive impact in the running game, William Likely made the biggest impact in the passing game once again. His late interception of Nate Sudfeld sealed the win for the Terps, and he proved once again that he plays about 6 inches taller than his 5-foot-7 frame.
  • Takin’ care of business – Randy Edsall mentioned the phrase “business trip” many times this week, and his team took care of business on the road once again. They’ll return to College Park with a record of 4-1 (1-0 Big Ten Conference) with Ohio State coming to town next Saturday.
