With a better defensive effort in the 2nd half, the University of Maryland beat Radford, winning 65-60. With the victory, MD moves to 7-3. The Terps welcomed back PG Pe’Shon Howard tonight, and next week will get to add Alex Len to the lineup.

The Good:

1) Pankey got MD on the scoreboard, with a rebound and follow. Fouled on the play, he would also convert at the charity stripe. Nice rebound from Pankey with about 10 mts left in the game. Radford was playing without their best big man Jonathan Edwards, and Pankey took advantage scoring a career high 17 points, and adding 5 boards.

2) Was great to see Howard back on the court. His first play of the game, he was able to press the ball up the court, and make a strong pass. Howard buried his first shot attempt. It was also nice seeing him pressure the ball. He hit a 3 to give the Terps the 24-23 lead. Working in and out, Howard found Padgett from the top of the key, when the Jr. Forward flashed to the basket. Howard played more minutes than anticipated, and finished with 7 points, 3 assists, and a steal.

3) Fantastic give and go from Parker to Pankey. Parker used his athleticism to grab a rebound off a Padgett miss, and quickly score. Athleticism was also on display in the 2nd half on a block in transition. The Sophomore Forward had 6 points, 8 boards, 1 assist, and 1 block.

4) Nice aggressive rebound from Padgett on a Parker miss. Padgett had a double-double, finishing with 10 points, 10 boards, and a block.

5) Faust got his first basket in transition. Faust quickly got down the court, and scored  with a change of direction at the rim. With dribble penetration, Faust drew the defense and delivered to Pankey for the slam. Faust finished with 7 points, 7 boards, and 3 assists.

6) Held scoreless for the first 18 minutes or so, Stoglin found his scoring touch as the half came to a close. In the 2nd half, Stoglin drew the defense, and was able to dish to Pankey for an easy slam. Stoglin hit a tough look to give the Terps the 58-51 lead with under 3 and 1/2 minutes to play. He would finish with 15 points, 5 boards, and 3 assists.

7) Mosely consistently works very hard on the defensive end. Tonight he had 3 blocks, and a steal. He also had a nice pass to a cutting Howard in the 2nd half.

8) Weijs made an extra-pass, to find Stoglin for an open 3. Stoglin would hit that shot, putting the Terps up 45-42. Weijs finished with 3 blocks, and 2 steals.

9) The defensive intensity increased in the 2nd half, and MD held the Highlanders without a FG during a 9 minute stretch.

10) MD won on the boards 41-34.

The Bad:

1) Pankey missed a dunk in the opening minute.

2) With MD down 5-3, Faust forced a shot, and missed everything from maybe 10 feet. This was followed by another ugly miss at the 12 minute mark. A third air ball from Faust was thrown up with about 8 minutes left in the 1st.

3) Four minutes into the game, the Terps were down 12-6, with Radford scoring on 4 of their first 5 shots.

4) With the game tied at 12, nobody from MD boxed out, allowing Radford to get the rebound and easy put back.

5) Stoglin was held scoreless until 2 minutes left in the first half. After putting the Terps up 3 (45-42), Stoglin forced a couple of more 3 point attempts on the following few possessions. The Terps needed to go to the rim, and were settling for poor shots from the outside. Stoglin was just 5 of 18 from the floor.

6) Padgett picked up his 3rd foul a minute into the 2nd half. Faust delivered a good look, that Padgett was not able to finish with under 6 minutes left.

7) Howard missed a critical FT with about 1:20 left on the clock, and had 3 turnovers.

8) Mosley had 3 points, shooting just 1 for 4 from the floor. As intense as he is on the defensive end, he can be very passive as an offensive player.

9) MD was 20 of 32 from the foul line, Pankey missed 4 shots, and Parker missed 3.

The Ugly:

1) Coach Turgeon said in his press conference this week that the focus in practice has been defense. With that in-mind, it had to be irritating for him to watch his defense be shredded in the 1st half (Radford was 14 of 30 from the floor, including 6 of 13 from 3 point land. RJ Price had 16 points, knocking down 3 of his 5 3 point attempts, in the first 20 minutes.).

2) The Terps were playing a lower-tier Big South team, and for too often in the game; MD was unable to take advantage of their better size, strength, and athleticism.
