InsideMDSports reported this week that University of Maryland Running Back Caleb Porzel had left the program.

Even with the loss of Porzel, Maryland still has a very deep and talented RB corps. However, just because there is plenty of talent in Scott, Meggett, Douglas, and Adams – that does not mean you can just look the other way about losing Porzel.

Porzel, while smaller, is a back with home-run potential on every carry. When the Terps were recruting Porzel, they were also actively pursuing Baltimore’s Tavon Austin. When Porzel agreed to join the Terrapins, the recruitment of Austin basically ended.

Austin took went to Morgantown and joined the Mountaineers of West Virginia. During Austin’s Freshman season last-year, he had 15 receptions out of the backfield. Austin is now appearing on numerous lists as a potential breakout player in the Big East.

Reading between the lines there appears to be a number of reasons for Porzel’s departure, and they point to issues outside of the control of the Coaching staff. Still, that does not make losing Porzel any more tolerable.
