According to The Baltimore Sun, the Orioles reached a deal last-night with their 2nd-round pick Mychel Givens.

This is just excellent news, and shows the extra benefit received of trading Aubrey Huff yesterday.

Orioles Scouting Director Joe Jordan is quoted in The Sun article as saying the O’s have spent just under $8.8M in signing bonuses for the 2009 draft, the second-highest in club history.

While many can quibble with some selections made, you have to respect the Orioles for selecting, and signing the players they identified.

Givens is a High-school prospect that is known as a superior athlete. At best, he is years away from the bigs. Still, he instantly becomes the best Middle Infield prospect in the system, and will have a legitimate chance to be the O’s SS of the future.

I will have to take a closer look of where I would rank the recently acquired Brett Jacobson among Oriole prospects, but I would have Givens as probably the O’s 11th or 12th best-prospect.

Below are links to my Draft-night post on Givens, complete with several scouting reports, and the most-recent updated prospect list after the 7/31 non-waiver deadline.
