Tim Bascom was the O’s 4th round selection in 2007 out of Central Florida.

When he was drafted, there was plenty of reason for optimisim in his future.

Heading into his Junior season, he was a 3rd team All-American, and Conference USA Pre-season Pitcher of the Year.

However, prior to the year he had injured his knee. The injury was seen as minor, and he continued to play through the pain without an MRI.

Bascom had told his father that he believed the injury was possibly more serious than initially believed, and together they reached out to Manager and Pitching Coach to express their concerns. Those concerns went unanswered.

While Bascom had an effective season, he was reinjured on May 2nd, roughly 1 month prior to the 2006 draft.

The Bascom’s told the Major League Scouting Bureau that his knee was not right. Via MRI it was confirmed that Bascom had been playing with a torn ACL.

This scared of numerous teams that been looking at him as high as the 2nd round. The San Diego Padres took him in the 6th.

San Diego had made their offer to Bascom through his ‘Advisor’ Scott Boras. Bascom thought the offer was low, and did not sign. He attempted to return to UCF, but was unable to do so as his appeal was denied.

Bascom spent the following year rehabbing, worked out for several teams including the O’s, and was on an independent team. All of which led to his 4th round selection in 2007.

In 2007, Bascom started 12 games for Class A Delmarva and went 3-3 with a 3.74 era. He struck out 55 and walked 24 in 67 1/3 innings pitched. He also had 1 start for Frederick.

In 2008, Bascom struggled with Frederick. He was 6-5, with a 5.78 era. In 95 innings, he allowed 115 hits, 15 homers, 46 walks, with 74 k’s.

To start 2009, Bascom was again at Frederick. Prior to the promotion, he was 4-5 with a 3.40 era. In 53 innings, he allowed 59 hits, 6 homers, 13 walks, with 32 k’s.

With Arrieta, and Patton moving up to AAA Norfolk, Bascom received the call to AA Bowie.

Making his first start with the Baysox last night, Bascom went 7 innings, allowed 7 hits, 1 er, 2 bb’s, with 7 k’s.

Bascom has a lot of arms ahead of him in the system, but if he can finish strong this year, he can get back on the radar.

As he is 24, and there are clearly a bunch of starters ahead of him – you wonder if the O’s would consider converting him into a short-reliever at some point.
