At 49-40, the Colorado Rockies are currently 3 games behind the San Diego Padres in the National League West.

Their star SS Troy Tulowitzki has been on the DL with a fractured left-wrist, but is scheduled to begin a rehab stint next week. With Tulowitzki definitely on the mend, the Rockies figure to be more willing to move the depth that their SS prospect Chris Nelson represents.

Nelson is playing in the Pacific Coast League (AAA) which always leads to inflated numbers, but his production can not be totally ignored.

Nelson, who turns 25 in September, has a .939 OPS in 183 at-bats. In those 183 at-bats, Nelson has 11 doubles, 3 triples, and 7 homers. To go along with his .333 batting average, he is showing some plate-discipline with 18 walks against 31 k’s. In his 50 games in AAA, he has spent the majority at SS (32 games, .971 fielding percentage) and 2nd (15 games, .986 fielding percentage).

The 2004 1st-round pick has slipped in the prospect rankings. In 2005, he was the 26th ranked prospect in all of baseball, by 2008 he was the 7th ranked prospect for Colorado. He might never amount to much, but he is exactly the type of player I would hope to see the O’s obtain at the deadline. A positional prospect with some ceiling, at positions of need.
