I will not characterize the use of Alfredo Simon tonight as wrong, but it was an example of stubbornness from Orioles Manager Buck Showalter.

We all understand that these last 50 games or so, is simply an evaluation period for Showalter. He wants to have a better grasp on exactly what it is he has.

Showalter sees Simon’s big power arm, and recognizes the ability. Coming into tonight, Simon had allowed at-least 2 hits in each of his 3 previous outings since August 4th. Going with Simon tonight was an example of Showalter trying to see how Simon deals with adversity.

After Uehara’s two perfect innings, you could see how this game was progressing and the decision looming for Showalter. Ideally Simon gets the 3 outs, and we are already celebrating the O’s winning 3 of 4 from Chicago. It did not work out that way, but if this gives Showalter further understanding of what he has in Simon; you can argue the decision was still worthwhile.
