Hi Roland,

Pie is out of options… and with his minor league track-record, physical tools, and age… someone would make a waiver claim…

You are correct though, the EL is a pitcher friendly league, and I just saw stats yesterday on the Hardball Times basically equating the Eastern League with the PCL, and International Leagues.

I went into this past off-season wanting Reimold to be handed the everyday LF job for the O's, with Scott moved to DH…

Reimold had had 693 AA at-bats, in which he has produced 201 hits, 44 doubles, 3 triples, 36 homers, 118 rbi, 117 runs, 80 walks, 129 k's, 290 baa, and an 880ish OPS… and I was excited to see him have the opportunity on an everyday basis with the O's.

When Pie was obtained, Reimold chances of playing for the O's in 2009 were non-existent (unless the O's decided to move Scott).

I like Montanez… I can think he can help a team as a 4th OF… and Tony Pente (Managing Editor of Orioles Hangout) said Montanez was a decent-fielder with a mediocre arm… so, I believe some of the talk of Montanez's horrific defense is overrated.

With Pie vs Montanez, my main issue comes back to age. Just think in a year such as 2009, where you have no illusions of competeting with Tampa, Boston, and NY - that you give as much playing time as possible to the younger player, with the higher-perceived upside.

Appreciate you reading, and the questions provided… good thoughts.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris,
I can accept the argument for Pie and his raw ability and age. But, I've heard accounts that he has sometimes looked lost on defense. Shouldn't he be the one down for experience/playing time? Isn't the EL a pitcher friendly league? Even at AA level, couldn't it near the PCL's test of a hitter? Furthermore, since in recent years, AAA has been the place where teams stow AAAA players, and AA is for the high level prospects, wouldn't that place them at similar developmental stages? I like your analysis. Just wanted to hear your take.
Roland
