As you can see, this list is wide receiver, offensive line, and edge defender-heavy. Not great if you need a quarterback, but we knew that. I’ll also say the offensive line and safety positions are probably the deepest in my opinion, which is good news for teams like Baltimore, New York (Jets and Giants), Cleveland, San Francisco, and Miami.

]]> Last week the Ravens unveiled their new uniforms for the upcoming season and while I don’t really care about that kind of thing, it did perhaps shed some light on the identity of the franchise moving forward.

The devil or the raven is in the details, a new matte black helmet, and black talon stripes are nice touches but overall, the shirts and pants don’t look that different from the changes they made almost twenty-seven seasons ago. I have a feeling that with all eyes on Eric DeCosta to have a superb draft class he will lean more on the team’s history for the kind players that they will add this week, although I wouldn’t mind a few more risks.

Best Player Available vs. Biggest Needs

For years, Baltimore has trusted their board and often let the draft come to them. It’s a philosophy that has served them well over the years, but the question isn’t if it works, it’s is that that works now for this draft.

DeCosta has stated that he feels that the talent level falls off midway through Round One, so that could make Baltimore’s pick a sweet spot to land a blue-chip prospect at number 14.

Most experts and mocks are predicting the team will prioritize interior lineman or pass catchers for Lamar Jackson. While Connor Lew (Auburn) is the top-rated Center, many believe that the team will go instead with Vega Ioane the huge blocker from Penn State, or Spencer Fano (Utah), a versatile blocker who could fill multiple roles up front.

There have also been some sites that have linked offensive weapons like Makai Lemon (USC) who could be paired with Zay Flowers or Tight End Kenyon Sadiq (Oregon)who has 4.39 speed and would help solidify a depleted Tight End room with the losses of Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kolar.

Of course, there is always the possibility of trading back to gather more draft capital but with Baltimore holding eleven picks in the draft I don’t think that seems likely.

I think the Ravens stay on brand here and select Vega Ioane who seems to be the most frequent projection, has a bit of a mean streak and has the most plug and play potential available. Sometimes the best player out there fits a glaring need, as well.

Building Around Lamar – What’s missing?

The structure around the two-time MVP has been the focus and will continue to be so in Baltimore if they are to return the playoffs and make a run.

The team still has holes on the Offensive line especially with the departure of Tyler Linderbaum. A possible replacement could be Logan Jones, a Rimington trophy winner who attended the same school also is a possibility to play right away.

With Rashod Batman’s inconsistency issues returning and the need for more depth aside from Devontez Walker Baltimore could look to add to the receiving corps. The second and third rounds could offer some help there with Germie Bernard (Alabama) being a popular selection with 4.48 speed as well as Tai Felton (Maryland) who also could be a dangerous alternative. The Ravens also could find their Tight End here too. Eli Stowers (Vanderbilt) has had a formal combine with the team and is a favorite of Mel Kiper, while Mason Taylor (LSU) may also be a possibility.

Plenty of Needs

With 11 picks, DeCosta is expected to be aggressive and with multiple fifth round picks at his disposal he should be. He could look to package picks to trade up if one of the Ravens main targets is in danger of being snapped up.

I mentioned earlier about the strategy of best player against need. I feel like the Ravens will lean more into needs due to so many players leaving due to free agency. Having cost-controlled talent that can help you will be important in 2026.

I expect during the first several rounds for Baltimore that they reinvest in both lines. It was a sign of weakness last season when it came to protecting Lamar and being able to get penetration on the defensive side. Jesse Minter’s defense relies on getting pressure with the interior and being able to drop the rest into coverage and doesn’t blitz much.

Here’s how I see it:

First Round (14) -Vega Ioane (OG) (Penn State) – He did not allow a single sack in 2025 and is a mauler type that reasserts a physical presence along the line.

Second Round (45) – Caleb Banks (DT) (Florida) – 6’6” Game wrecker with a quick first step and a ton of potential.

Third Round (80) – Connor Lew (IOL) (Auburn) – The Ravens have a history of drafting Centers and he’s the best option available there.

Fourth Round (115) – Chris McClellan (DL) (Missouri) – Added depth piece to a rebuilding Defensive Line.

That’s much of the early draft capital being devoted to the lines. In the latter rounds, there is a need for coverage at Running Back, Corner, and a starting Punter. Jeff Yurk was an All-American Punter at Elon and is a rising prospect that the Ravens may draft in the seventh round to eliminate a bidding war with other teams such as Minnesota. Yurk had a private workout with Baltimore and the interest in him in reported to be significant.

]]> Nate Wiggins is the newest Baltimore Raven. 

Last night, the Clemson cornerback was selected by Eric DeCosta with the Ravens’ 1st round pick in the 2024 draft. That selection was perhaps due in part to the urging of Wiggins’ college coach, Dabo Swinney. 

According to Jamison Hensley, Swinney was texting DeCosta last night pleading with Baltimore to take Wiggins. Swinney mentioned that “Nate is as talented as we’ve ever had come through here at his position from a skill set standpoint.”  

Swinney has been the head coach of the Clemson Tigers since 2008; coincidentally when John Harbaugh assumed the same position with the Ravens. In that time, the Tigers have had five cornerbacks drafted to the NFL—all within the Top 100 picks: 

  • Andrew Booth, 42nd overall (2022) 
  • AJ Terrell, 16th overall (2020) 
  • Trayvon Mullen*, 40th overall (2019) 
  • Cordrea Tankersley, 97th overall (2017) 
  • Mackenzie Alexander, 54th overall (2016) 

(*Mullen is a current Raven, and also cousins with Lamar Jackson ) 

Who are the Ravens getting in Wiggins? A blazing fast, ultra-competitive cover corner that’s expected to start by the time Week 1 kicks off. He ran the 2nd-fastest 40-yard dash at this year’s combine (4.28 seconds), behind Xavier Worthy’s 4.21 40-yard dash (Worth was drafted by the Chiefs). Perhaps that’s an additional reason the Ravens drafted Wiggins—to keep pace with Kansas City. 

Long story short: Wiggins plays like a Raven. Speed is only useful if a player doesn’t give up on the play, and so many of the plays he made in college were effort plays. He will get beat, but he has exceptional ability to makeup ground and contest the catch point. 

Watching his attitude and play style, I’m reminded of Marcus Peters. Where Marlon Humphrey will usually align at the line of scrimmage, Peters usually played 5-6 yards off the line. Despite getting beat at times, Peters would make numerous interceptions and pass breakups using his instinct and effort. I see Wiggins as a similar (but much faster) player. 

When he pressed receivers in college, he would grant them access into their routes. However, when he played off a bit, he seemed much more “in phase” and comfortable to either drive on the ball or turn and run downfield. 

Statistically speaking, Wiggins was elite at Clemson. In three seasons, he allowed an average opposing quarterback rating of 56.5. He allowed 50 receptions in 109 targets (45.9  percent completion). On the whole, it was a solid move by Baltimore. Coupling Wiggins’ rare athleticism and mental toughness with the Ravens’ league-leading pass rush (60 sacks in 2023) was a combination too tempting to pass up. 

As for who’s next, the Ravens hold picks 62 (2nd round) and 93 (3rd round) tonight. There are so many good players left. Let’s take a look at who could join Wiggins in purple and black. 

Cooper Beebe (Kansas State) and Christian Mahogany (Boston College) are both interior offensive line prospects I like a lot. Either of them could be the choice at No. 62 and slot in at right guard. Wide receiver is still a need as well. Malachi Corley would be a perfect fit in this offense if he remains available until the end of the 2nd round. He reminds me of Michael Crabtree, Deebo Samuel, and Steve Smith, Sr. Corley’s physicality, leg churn through contact, and sideline balance are all valuable traits to have (especially in the AFC North). 

I’d like to think that in no particular order, the Ravens will come away from tonight with a new offensive lineman and a new wide receiver. Then, on Day 3, they can fortify their depth and perhaps acquire an additional starter. I’ve often said that the first three picks of any draft will tell the tale. So far, the Ravens are in good shape. They seem to have gotten a very good player that they rated much higher than where they got him without having to trade up. From their standpoint, last night was a big win. 

Today is a new day. If they stay the course, the Ravens will head into the weekend in great shape. Who knows? Maybe they’ll take Cooper DeJean in Round 2 to go along with Kyle Hamilton, Marcus Williams, Marlon Humphrey, Arthur Maulet, Brandon Stephens, and Nate Wiggins. 

I don’t think that’ll happen, but if it does, would there be a better secondary in football? Probably not.

In a little over a week, we will have finally made it to the 2024 NFL Draft. Shortly thereafter will follow minicamps, the schedule release, franchise tags, and training camp. If we can just get to next Thursday night, we will be in good shape. 

So much of the anticipation of the draft is rooted in the hope that your favorite team could make decisions that catapult it to perennial playoff success. The significance of the draft comes from the very real chance that one player could help your team win a Super Bowl. 

As for the Ravens, they’re one of a select few franchises that are already on the Super Bowl short list, even before the draft begins. Looking back at recent history (the last five years), the average position of the Ravens’ first picks has been 23rd overall. Any spot from 21 and beyond means that you’ve made the playoffs the previous season (except of course if a trade occurred). 

For Eric DeCosta to know he’s routinely operating from a foundation that has playoff-caliber talent is both gratifying and liberating. General managers that have enjoyed such consistent success are all the more able to stick to their preferred plan, as opposed to having to reach and hyper-extend their draft capital to compensate for shortfalls. 

This year, Ravens hold the 30th overall draft choice. Many expect them to select an offensive lineman or a wide receiver, with an edge defender, running back, and cornerback to follow in the middle rounds. By sheer averages, Baltimore could trade at some point during the draft, but there’s no way to accurately predict those. So, for now, let’s take a look at a first round mock draft, followed by a full 7-round mock draft only for the Ravens.

Quarterbacks will go early and often. We know this. Trades, though, are hard to predict. We don’t know if a team really likes a player or is leaking false information to skew perception for the rest of the teams to increase their chances of getting the guy they really want. If this scenario unfolds, I’d think the winners would be the Chargers, Jets, Colts, Seahawks, Steelers, and the Dolphins. Those teams would get highly-rated prospects at a position of need. 

Another benefit of having a successful season: picking in the bottom half of the first round where top prospects remain because of over-reaching selections by teams in the top half of the first round. 

The more I think about Baltimore’s draft approach, the more I think their first round pick will feel unsatisfying in the moment. When your only selection of the night could very well be an offensive lineman, that feels less exciting than taking a wide receiver or a quarterback. Due to how highlights are shown at scale, we as a public aren’t as familiar with offensive lineman play, and therefore aren’t as excited when our team drafts one—even if they’re a very good player. For the record, if quarterback is the most important position in football, the offensive line is 1A. If I’m a new head coach, the first person I’m looking to hire is an offensive line coach. If your offensive line lacks talent and cohesion, your team as a whole will never get out of first gear. I say all this to underscore how important it is the Ravens to draft an offensive lineman early in this draft, because of how well most other positions are already set up. 

What will the team do in nine days’ time? No one really knows, including the people in Baltimore’s draft room. But as a final piece to this final draft preview series, I give you my best guess for who the newest Ravens will be.

]]> When you think of the Ravens, you think of defense. 

Even with how dynamic Lamar Jackson has been, defense is still the identity of this team. In 23 of the franchise’s 28 seasons, their scoring defense has finished higher than their scoring offense. 

When it comes to this year’s squad, there are holes to fill on both sides of the ball. Offensive line and wide receiver are at the top of the list, but there are some defensive positions that need to be addressed as well. 

Baltimore lost Patrick Queen (Steelers) and Geno Stone (Bengals) in free agency. Queen was improving each year and Stone presented great value to the team himself, finishing 2nd in the NFL with seven interceptions in 2023. Baltimore fortunately re-signed Arthur Maulet, but that doesn’t negate the need for at least one more cornerback. 

Given the team’s identity, plausible draft board, and new defensive coordinator, one thing is for sure: whichever defender(s) they do select must play relentless, smart, complimentary football. They must have football IQ and football character. They must be worthy of continuing the legacy of great Ravens defenders. 

Unless an absolute stud like Cooper DeJean or Dallas Turner falls to Baltimore at No. 30, I don’t think the Ravens will take a defender with their first selection. Even if those guys were somehow still available when the Ravens go on the clock, it’s likely some offensive players the team needs more will be available as well. 

Assuming that’s true, that the earlier the Ravens draft a defender is in the second round, you’re view pivots to what players could be on the board in the mid-60s. Keep in mind that the Ravens usually do their best work in Rounds 3 and 4. 

Here are three players that I see as strong fits within Baltimore’s defense. 

Mike Sainristil, CB, Michigan  

My favorite prospect in the entire draft is Michigan’s cornerback Mike Sainristil. Bottom line: he does so many important things well. For any corner to succeed in the NFL, they have to be quick (to match athleticism with pro wideouts), but they also need recovery skills (as they all will get beat at some point). Sainristil has both of those in spades, but what really impresses me about him is his run defense. Rarely will he allow a blocker to get into his pads/chest. Sainristil shows up for a fight, engages with effort and technique (very important) and if he doesn’t funnel the ball carrier to his help, his pursues the ball carrier himself. 

Oh, and by the way, he made six interceptions last season, including one he returned 81 yards in the national championship game. He’s a big-game player that communicates, knows his stuff, and fits a need. 

Marshawn Kneeland, EDGE, Western Michigan 

Let me say this as clearly as possible: Marshawn Kneeland is absolutely desperate to get to the football. No matter if he beats his man initially or has to run all around the field to make the play, he will give his all to do so. His versatility meshes with what the Ravens run defensively as well. Kneeland will line up anywhere from the 5-technique in a 4-man front to an inside linebacker behind a 3-man front. 

He can stand to get a bit stronger at the point of attack, as his rushes will get blunted at times, but overall, what he offers is considerable and what the Ravens need. Brent Urban was re-signed last month to a 1-year contract, but Kneeland could be the long-term starter in Baltimore. 

Edgerrin Cooper, LB, Texas A&M 

Think Devin White—but three inches taller. Edgerrin Cooper is as dynamic a linebacker as there is in this draft. He goes from a sprint to stopped to a sprint again like that. That stop/start twitch and trigger is going to be very sought after in coming years, given the evolving talent of incoming quarterbacks. It seems his physical traits are on par with his mental processing, which isn’t always the case. A lot of people know what to do but can’t execute it quickly enough. Cooper can. He racked up an impressive 17.0 tackles for loss in the SEC West last season—the toughest division in college football—on his was to being named 1st team All-American. 

Another player Cooper reminds me of: new Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr. Both played the game with immense, but properly-calibrated urgency. Given that Baltimore’s leader Roquan Smith plays Cooper’s position, linebacker is definitely not a need. However, it wouldn’t hurt to add someone with a keen nose for the football like Cooper to complete the Ravens linebacker core. 

In fact, drafting him would go a long way in helping stifle the likes of running backs Nick Chubb (Cleveland), Najee Harris (Pittsburgh), and Zack Moss (Cincinnati). In Chubb’s last full season against the Ravens (2022), he gained 190 yards rushing and scored one touchdown. In Harris’ last full season against the Ravens (2023), he gained 149 yards rushing and scored one touchdown. Moss, in his most recent game against the Ravens (as a Colt in 2023) gained 122 yards rushing, 22 yards receiving, and scored one touchdown. There may be more pressing positions to address, but Eric DeCosta selecting a linebacker would not surprise me in the least.

Three weeks from today begins the 2024 NFL Draft and releases the tension that’s built up over months of waiting, conjecture, and hypotheticals. 

This is a particularly anticipated draft for Ravens fans, as it’s the draft right after their best season since they won a world championship more than a decade ago. The feeling is that Baltimore has work to do, yes, but is so close to hoisting the Lombardi trophy in New Orleans this coming February 9th. 

Having lost by a single touchdown to the eventual Super Bowl winners is both maddening and reassuring. Therefore, fans can approach this draft knowing they’re in good shape and their team won’t (have to) overcompensate to make up for talent deficits. Such is the perpetual wisdom of Eric DeCosta, Pat Moriarty, and company. 

As far as who the Ravens could select with their first round choice, an offensive lineman or wide receiver should be the priority. So, that’s where we’ll start this final preview: on offense. 

Bowl games are long gone, and the combine buzz has significantly cooled down. Pro Days are almost finished, too, so the evaluation period for these prospects is nearing it’s end. This is the time of year when the best decisions can be made, as the most information is available. 

Given Baltimore’s current roster and offensive philosophy, I feel like they should not trade their 30th overall pick. If they were to trade up, they’d have to relinquish some of the precious draft capital they’ve carefully procured. If they were to trade down, they risk losing out on a top offensive prospect for the sake of additional draft picks (which they have plenty of). Staying put at No. 30, I believe, is the best option for them. 

As to who they could select, it comes down to two main criteria: what positions are the Ravens targeting, and who could conceivably be on the board when they’re on the clock. Seeing as how Baltimore lost 60 percent of its starting offensive line in free agency (both guards and its right tackle), that position has to be the first thought. Wide receiver will be a place the Ravens look as well, but it seems like there’s less supply of good offensive linemen than there is good wide receivers in this year’s class. 

While the Ravens don’t need starters at center or left tackle, don’t be alarmed if they draft a player who played there in college. Some of the following prospects have played significant snaps at other positions besides the one we’re most used to seeing them play. Baltimore has a plan. 

Here is the short list of prospects I think the Ravens ought to consider selecting from in the first round. (note: positions listed according to where they played in college) 

  • Kiren Amegadjie, LT/LG, Yale 
  • Jackson Powers-Johnson, C/RG, Oregon 
  • Cooper Beebe, LG/LT, Kansas State 
  • Jordan Morgan, LT, Arizona 
  • Zach Frazier, C, West Virginia 
  • Graham Barton, LT, Duke 

I’ve ranked these prospects based on my personal opinion of how they’d best fit within the Ravens offense. Considering the quality of opponent, consistency of performance, and positional versatility, I feel these players give the Ravens the best chance to improve their offensive line from Day 1. 

Amegadjie and Powers-Johnson look like the front-runners to me. Amegadjie displays really impressive patience when getting into his pass sets. You can just tell he is not overwhelmed by the play call, protection, or any stunts happening in front of him. He’s a sound player with a desire to bury his opponent. He won’t often get beat, but when he does, it’s probably due to a mistake he made—not because he was overpowered. He played 58 percent of his collegiate snaps at left tackle, and the other 42 percent at left guard. Needless to say, the Ravens need all the help they can get on the offensive line, and would especially like to draft the Yale product, as he presents insurance against another Ronnie Stanley injury. 

Powers-Johnson presents a similarly strong case to the Ravens for drafting him. While his main position is currently accounted for by a former Pro Bowler, his ability at a position of need improves his stock even more. From the first snap of his you watch, you can tell he plays like a Raven. He is tough, yes, but playing like a Raven also means you have long-term stamina, mental resilience, and a desire to win every rep no matter the opponent or game situation. Drafting Powers-Johnson to play alongside Linderbaum would be a really good move by the Ravens, because while Stanley currently holds down the left side, there’s no returning veteran who’s started consistently on the right side. Selecting Powers-Johnson would help balance things out a bit if Baltimore chose to have him slot in at right guard. 

Operated by a mobile quarterback, both Yale and Oregon ran offenses that show similar looks to what the Ravens ran in their first season led by Todd Monken. Of course, that doesn’t guarantee everything will translate, but it gives you a solid foundation from which to work. Both players enter this draft with a high floor, and while I believe Amegadjie has the higher ceiling, either of them look capable of starting Week 1. 

If the Ravens choose to select a wide receiver with the 30th overall pick, I wouldn’t be upset. They need help there, too. I just think there’s no question that where they need the most help, on either side of the ball, is the first line of protection (literally) for Lamar Jackson. That tells you all you need to know.

    Analysis 

    After many months of anticipation and speculation, the 2023 NFL Draft is nearly here. It’s so close. 

    If you’re like me, within days of this draft concluding, you’ll be on to 2024 (insert Caleb Williams vs. Marvin Harrison Jr. debate). I know, I can’t help myself. 

    Until then, let’s dig in, one last time, to the class of 2023. 

    About five years ago, I received some great advice from The NFL Network’s Charles Davis on how to compile your own list of top prospects: 

    No. 1—Trust your gut. It’s your list, so make sure it reflect your evaluation, first and foremost. 

    No. 2—Review a small number of evaluations from those you trust. This is meant to be a guide only. 

    No. 3—Keep a running list throughout the year so that you’re able to track player progress and you don’t have to cram analysis in at the end of the season. 

    No. 4—Revise your composite list, and before finalizing, refer back to No. 1. 

    When evaluating collegiate players through the lens of what makes a successful pro, you must be consistent. Any evaluation that sways with the wind is a flawed one. The best teams are the ones that stick to their principles and trust their process. 

    There are two main ways to assess a player’s traits: which ones make a successful player overall, and which makes a successful player at that position.

    When you sift through all the individual components, you must project whether or not the player will be a good fit in your team and organization. That part is much harder to predict but is equally as important as the player’s on-field performance. 

    All that said, here are a few of my favorite prospects. 

    Bijan Robinson 

    The Texas running back is everything you want a running back to me. Strong, fast, balanced, determined, and productive. Robinson projects to be a Day 1 starter after excelling at a blue blood program. He also seems to be a strong fit for teams which could potentially draft him (Giants, Cowboys, Eagles). 

    Will Anderson Jr. 

    The most dominant defensive player in this draft. Anderson plays a premium position and does so with fierce determination. He has an incredible motor and get-off. Another Day 1 starter with captain potential. 

    Jaxon Smith-Njigba 

    “JSN” is a terrific prospect. He played elite-level high school football in Texas, burst onto the scene at Ohio State early, and despite injury, still looks to be a Pro Bowl caliber player. His hands, route-running, accel/decel are all impressive, but perhaps the most impressive part of his game is his ability to turn good plays into great plays. Smith-Njigba possesses the field awareness and burst to navigate any kind of defense and make game-changing plays every week. 

    Bryan Bresee 

    The former Damascus High School star didn’t waste any time making an impact at Clemson. As a nose tackle, Bresee’s impact might not be apparent, but rest assured he’s a problem for the offense every time he steps on the field. He’s a persistent force in the middle of the defensive line, that not only makes plays but frees up those around him to do the same. He’s a leader and one who any coach would be happy to build their defense around. 

    Final projection for the Ravens 

    Whoever the Ravens pick will depend largely on where they pick. They currently hold the 22nd selection, but I’d say there’s a 65-70 percent chance they trade down from there. However, I do think they will stay in the first round and will pick somewhere between 28-31. 

    If that’s the case, and given everything we’ve learned over recent months, my final projection for who the Ravens will take is: Kelee Ringo, Cornerback, Georgia. He has the premier size, speed, and pedigree the Ravens covet from their defensive backs, and he fits a need. Draft him to take the place of free agent departure Marcus Peters, and all of a sudden, the Ravens have the best defensive backfield in football.

    ]]>     Well, Ravens fans, we’re 16 days away from the NFL Draft. 

    Every year the anticipation builds for so long, yet it seems like teams don’t have enough time to evaluate all the prospects they want. Thankfully for Baltimore, they have a seasoned group of evaluators on the case.  

    A few days ago, the Ravens agreed to a 1-year deal with wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr. Long story short, it’s a risk. He didn’t play at all last year and reportedly was given $15 million guaranteed. However, if it works out and OBJ stays healthy, he can be special—best receiver in the league kind of special. 

    Of course, the Ravens are banking on the latter. Before going down in the Rams’ Super Bowl win over the Bengals, Beckham was cruising. He was getting what he wanted against a very good Bengals defense. His stat line was “only” two catches for 52 yards, but he scored a touchdown, and perhaps best of all—he was able to get open. Anyone who’s a Ravens fan knows how important it is to have receivers that get open. 

    The Beckham signing not only helps the wide receiver position, but it allows Eric DeCosta and his team some flexibility on draft night; flexibility they desperately needed with only five picks currently at their disposal. 

    Every team (except for those with the first and last pick of the draft) always have three options: use their pick, trade up, or trade down. The Ravens were never a serious candidate to trade up. They don’t have a lot of picks to begin with and, as of Tuesday morning, still have yet to lock down their quarterback. The only player I foresee them entertaining a leap up the board for is Alabama EDGE Will Anderson, and that’s quite a long shot as he should be gone by pick no. 3. 

    Therefore, the only practical options are to stay at pick 22 or trade down. If they stay at pick 22, the Ravens could go with another receiver. That’s certainly still an option, though less so now that Beckham and Nelson Agholor are in the fold. More likely, cornerback and edge defender will be the top priority in Round 1.

    Even before the Beckham move, cornerback was a top priority. Now, it may be the priority. Joey Porter, Jr. and Deonte Banks are two excellent prospects. They play tough, skilled, smart football, and are the rare athletic cornerback that likes to tackle. Both are strong fits in the Ravens defense. The problem is they both may be off the board before pick 22. 

    As is often the case, the best players to fit the Ravens are the ones who may not “flash” right away. I consider all those players blue chip prospects. They possess very good athleticism, competitive fire, and football IQ. The Ravens are in a good spot at this pick, as they’re virtually guaranteed to get a solid Week 1 starter. The only “downside” to picking here is that they’ll pass up their best chance to acquire additional picks. 

    The Ravens have the chance to really put the clamps on the rest of the division by coupling Porter with Marlon Humphrey. Marcus Peters may still be in Mike Macdonald’s plans, but that is not known as of yet. 

    Think about the Seahawks secondary of a decade ago. This is what that pick could do for the Ravens. Problem: Porter’s dad, Joey Sr., played a long time for a team that also needs a top-flight cornerback (the Steelers, who just so happen to be Baltimore’s arch-rival). 

    As much as a top cornerback would boost the Ravens defense and help mitigate 4th-quarter collapses, wide receiver is still the top need on the team. Drafting Addison, as sure a receiver prospect as there is this year, could be the move that stops the bleeding. 

    Trade down options: 

    Cornerback: Julius Brents (Kansas State), Kelee Ringo (Georgia), 

    Edge defender: Nolan Smith (Georgia), Adetomiwa Adebawore (Northwestern) 

    Wide receiver: Zay Flowers (Boston College), Jalin Hyatt (Tennessee),  

    Offensive line: O’Cyrus Torrence (Florida), John Michael Schmitz (Minnesota) 

    Interior defensive line: Bryan Bresee (Clemson), Mazi Smith (Michigan)

    As for the more likely scenario, aka Baltimore’s wheelhouse, prepare for them to trade back, potentially out of the first round altogether. Obviously, this is all subject to change as teams you think would be open to a trade may not be in the position then that they’re in now. That said, there are a few teams that could be open to swapping picks with the Ravens: the Saints, the Eagles, and the Chiefs (picks 29-31). 

    This represents the most-likely scenario for a couple of reasons. First, the Ravens want to stay in the first round as each first round pick carries a potential 5th-year team option. Conversely, staying in the first round wouldn’t cost the other team as much as if they had to move up from the mid-30’s to 22 overall. In other words, it would be a mutually beneficial deal. Another reason the Ravens trading down but staying in the first round is most plausible is because, while trading down yields more picks, at the end of the day they want a premium player which they’d most likely get if they stay in Round 1. 

    While Bryan Bresee is the best prospect of this group, he plays the same position as that of Travis Jones, Baltimore’s 3rd-round pick a season ago. Drafting him isn’t totally out of the question, but doing so would be hard to justify if these other players are available. 

    Julius Brents is a player who’s been gaining a lot of momentum since the Senior Bowl. He has near perfect dimensions (6’2”, 198 pounds) to go along with a 41-inch vertical and a RAS (Relative Athletic Score) of 9.82. Using him alongside Brandon Stephens (6’1”, 215 pounds) and Kyle Hamilton (6’4”, 215 pounds) is both an exciting prospect for John Harbaugh and an anxious prospect for opposing offenses.  

    Drafting Brents would not only solidify Baltimore’s secondary as the best in football, but it would also enable the team to add extra picks and, once again, allow the team to keep Brents on a rookie contract for a 5th year if they choose to do so.

    Considering the talent in the AFC North, the positions Baltimore needs most to combat their opponents is cornerback and edge defender. Based on their own personal needs, positions they’re likely to look at include wide receiver and cornerback. 

    Regardless of your stance on a particular prospect, you have to admit the Ravens are in a good spot. They have robust nucleus of players on their current roster, they have a solid group of players to choose from with their first pick, and they’re not pigeon-holed into taking any one player of position. 

    All in all, things are setting up well for Eric DeCosta, Joe Hortiz, and company.

    ]]>     In less than 30 days, the 2023 NFL Draft will begin. With only five selections currently at their disposal, it’s not hard to believe the Ravens will trade out of the first round altogether in order to acquire more draft capital. However, one can also make the case that the Ravens wide receiver room needs major help. 

    When forecasting the Ravens first choice, whether that’s at 22, later in the first round, or out of the first round altogether, choosing wide receiver as the top position of need is an easy choice. Baltimore getting the player it wants is much murkier prospect. 

    The Ravens are in a unique position. There’s not that much competition for a wide receiver amongst teams in front of them. Tennessee (11), Houston (12), Tampa Bay (19), and Seattle (20) are all teams that could go with a pass catcher at those respective selections. Those teams have other pressing needs as well. In other words, there aren’t many teams who need one position as badly as the Ravens do. 

    Here’s an estimate for which players could be taken from No. 1-21: 

    QB: C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, Anthony Richardson 

    WR: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jordan Addison, Quentin Johnston 

    RB: Bijan Robinson 

    OL: Peter Skoronski, Paris Johnson, Broderick Jones, John Michael Schmitz 

    IDL: Jalen Carter, Bryan Bresee, Calijah Kancey 

    EDGE: Will Anderson, Tyree Wilson, Myles Murphy, Lukas Van Ness, Nolan Smith 

    LB: Trenton Simpson 

    CB: Isaiah Witherspoon, Christian Gonzalez, Deonte Banks, Joey Porter, Jr., Kelee Ringo 

    S: Brian Branch 

    There are 26 names listed above, and that’s not counting the one or two outlandish reaches teams make every year. Without making any big concessions, it’s fair to say the Ravens are in good shape with their first pick. Even if their wide receiver of choice is gone, that mean another top prospect will be there. Either way, knowing you’re picking before these top players are likely to be chosen has to help settle the nerves. 

    As far as specific wide receivers go, it’s no secret I think Jaxon Smith-Njigba is the best of the bunch. Jordan Addison is my 1-A, and then from there, I see a few players that would be a strong fit in Baltimore.  

    The best receiver I foresee being available when the Ravens select, after Smith-Njigba and Addison, is Boston College standout Zay Flowers. At 5’10” and 182 pounds, Flowers ran a 4.42-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He’s fast, quick, and doesn’t mess around. 

    From Year 1 to Year 4, Flowers averaged 15.6 yards per reception—that’s remarkable production. He also scored 29 receiving touchdowns at Boston College—as many as Dez Bryant, Tavon Austin, and Tyler Lockett. 

    From his school profile: “[Flowers] finished his career as BC’s all-time leader in career receptions (200), career receiving yards (3,056) and career receiving touchdowns (29).” 

    Flowers may be the best receiver in this draft in terms of uncovering. He’s exceptional at forcing defensive backs to bail out or flip their hips prematurely. He makes them do what they don’t want to do so he can do what he wants to do. If he had a more accurate quarterback, he may be looked at as a fringe Top 10 pick. His route running is really advanced. He reminds me of Hollywood Brown, but with more size. 

    He’s very smart, too. You can tell when watching him that he’s aware of the situation. That may seem like something everyone should be aware of, but as we know, that’s not always the case. Flowers isn’t Jerry Rice, obviously, but he does something that Rice did expertly—not declare the route until the very last moment. At times, he made defenders look downright foolish. 

    How does Flowers fit into the Ravens? If Baltimore drafts him, I think he’s instantly their best receiver, even better than a healthy Rashod Bateman. So as far as fit goes, he could be their No. 1 guy. Flowers is used a to run-heavy offensive attack, too, as the Eagles ran the ball 45.2 percent of the time last year. He’s used to playing in cold weather and making big plays whenever the ball comes his way. I don’t know of any character concerns, either. 

    In a recent Twitter poll I conducted, 79 percent of those who voted think the Ravens receiving core ranks in the last quartile in the league. I think Baltimore would be well-advised to draft two (or maybe even three wideouts) this season. That position needs to be fixed. 

    Selecting a stud like Flowers would be a great first step toward completing this roster.
