Very nice article, I enjoyed it very much, and I agree completely. However, because RF has more ground to cover and requires a stronger arm, I think it is logical that Pearce or Lough would start in RF and De Aza would fit in LF. That would maximize De Aza’s range ability and minimize his arm deficiency.
The four outfielders we have will not hit a lot of homeruns, but that’s okay.
Certainly, The Royals would like to have Lough back, even if he doesn’t hit a lot of homeruns.

In reply to Jeremy. Totally! There are plenty of in-house options for the Orioles. Lough is, in my opinion, De Aza's biggest competitor for the starting job, since my understanding is that Alvarez needs more time in the minors and Pearce has been a more regular LF option for the Orioles. De Aza is my pick for most likely to take over RF, but he's far from the only one who could capably do so.

While De Aza is theoretically likely to produce comparable results to Markakis in RF, this article fails to address several key pieces of the post-Markakis “puzzle” – namely, the fact that IF the Os stick with what they have in the OF (unlikely IMO), there is no guarantee that De Aza is the one who will be handed the RF job. There are several different scenarios that could play out involving not only De Aza but also Lough, Pearce, and even Dariel Alvarez. This is noteworthy because all four are projected to approximate (or exceed, in Pearce’s case) the production that the Os would have expected from Markakis. The point in my opinion is not that De Aza is equal to Markakis but that the Os are well equipped in general to replace him.
