Going into June, everyone in Baltimore was talking about the prolonged struggles Adam Jones had shown since June of 2009. It had reached the point where many were speculating a return trip to AAA was going to occur.
Jones ended that talk with his play this month, with .952 OPS (.352 On-base%, .600% slugging). He had a .320 batting average, 8 homers, 4 doubles, and 21 rbi as he raised his overall OPS to .753 for the year.
The one offensive number he did not improve during the month was his walks to k ratio. He finished June with 4 walks and 24 k’s, giving him 9 walks and 65 k’s for the year. Until he can improve in this regard, he is never going to be a truly elite player. However, as this month of June illustrated, his overall talent and abilities are immense. He is a player capable of carrying a team for several weeks. This is also a good reminder to keep in-mind for all players about how a Major League season really is a marathon.
Jones now has hits in 40 of his last 49 games overall.
