Position Player of the Week: Gregory Lorenzo – OF
.375/.375/.531 (12/32) with 3 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 0 BB, 12 K, 2 SB (A)
Lorenzo is your classic grinder. He might not have the greatest tool-set, but he will give 150% on the diamond. He has plus speed but still needs to work on base running. Sometimes he actually pushes too hard and it causes mistakes on the basepath or errors in the field. Of course, I will never bag too much on a person giving their all. At the plate, Lorenzo is too noisy right now. A scout told me, “Hands are all over the place, head moves too much , but I still love his athleticism.” I think Lorenzo has enough ability to move up to the next level, but he will need to calm the swing down before anything.
Starting Pitcher of the Week: Juan Guzman – RHP
1 GS, 7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K (A)
Guzman is a talented pitcher with some mechanical inconsistencies. He has a strong arsenal, able to flash his fastball anywhere from 90-94 mph. His curveball has improved over the past year, largely due to some mechanical changes. While he may not end up as a starting pitcher down the road, there is definitely some ability here. When he is not falling over on his delivery and staying consistent on his follow-through, he really shows some excellent stuff. Guzman is a guy to keep an eye on.
Relief Pitcher of the Week: Matt Hobgood – RHP
Matt Hobgood – RHP – 2 G, 8.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K (A+)
Hobgood has accomplished quite a bit this season. The biggest factor in his success has been the ability to stay on the field. This was the number one priority for the first first round selection. A scout told earlier in April that he needed to see how Hobgood looked in the latter part of the season. Not only has he pitched well, but he was promoted to Frederick and has continued his success (besides one hiccup). It’s been a long road back to health for Hobgood, but he finally put together a full season and can certainly grow off of this down the road.
