At one-point last night’s Bowie Baysox starter Chorye Spoone was considered one of the jewels of the Oriole system.
In 2007, Spoone had spent the entire year at Single A Frederick going 10-9, with a 3.26 era. He had pitched 152 innings, allowed just 108 hits, had 67 walks, with 133 k’s. Somewhere around that point, Tony Pente of Orioles Hangout had stated he believed Spoone might have had the best pure stuff in the organization.
Unfortunately injuries hit, and Spoone pitched a total of 70.3 innings during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
After getting some-time at 3 different levels to end 2009, Spoone is starting 2010 at Bowie. He does not turn 25 until mid-September, so Spoone will spend all of the 2010 season as a 24 year-old. As the year progresses, it will be very interesting to hear reports of his velocity, and see if his stuff has returned.
Last-night, Spoone went 4 innings, allowed 6 hits, 2 er, 2 bb’s, with 2 k’s. I would imagine even more than the results, the focus for Spoone’s development is making sure he gets 125+ innings of work during this season.
Caleb Joseph was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles yesterday, and Wilfrido Perez pitched 1 inning scoreless, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, with 3 k’s for his first save.
