If anything could be worse than the 2-11 ( soon to be 2-12) start for the Baltimore Orioles, it is the news that has come today for Pie and Roberts – and the results of Bergesen’s third 2010 start.
MASN’s Roch Kubatko reported this morning that Pie underwent an MRI this morning and could miss up to three months with an injury to his latissimus dorsi muscle

With Reimold, Scott, and Montanez – the O’s do have the depth to deal with Pie being out, but it still hurts. Pie is easily the best defensive OF of that group, and was the logical back-up for Jones in CF if you wanted to give Jones a night off. Pie’s injury makes it that much harder to move Scott.
The fact that Trembley is playing Montanez in LF over Reimold is indication he believes Reimold is still not physically capable of playing LF everyday.
MASN’s Amber Theoharis reported during tonight’s game that Roberts is facing being out of action for some-time, possibly a significant amount of time. Wigginton, and Turner represent decent depth at the position, but obviously neither one is Roberts. We will have to see what official news comes out tomorrow. He was placed on the DL on April 12th, retroactive to the 10th. Roberts had met with spine-specialist Dr. Lee Riley on Friday the 16th and reported that he was feeling a ‘little better.’
As good news comes in 3’s, Bergesen was only able to go 2.2 innings tonight, allowing 4 er, on 6 hits, and 3 bb’s. He was not helped by his defense, but his ERA is over 12, and he allowed his 4th homer in 10.1 innings this year.
He needs to go back to AAA and get some work there.
So if Bergesen goes back to Norfolk, who replaces him? Chris Tillman will get straightened out (another rough 1 inning outing last-night) and will eventually force his way back to Baltimore sooner than later. Still, you could not replace Bergesen with Tillman at this point.
If you were going to send Bergesen back to the Minors, the current answer would be Jake Arrieta. Arrieta also pitched tonight, making his 3rd 2010 start for Norfolk.
Arrieta worked 6 innings, allowed 5 hits, 1 er, 3 bb’s, with 5 k’s. The earned-run was the first run allowed by Arrieta this season.
This means Arrieta has pitched 18 innings, allowed 11 hits, 1 er, 9 walks, with 12 k’s. Not particularly happy with the walks, but I still think this move should be made.
