Oriole pitching prospects Jake Arrieta, and Zack Britton both took the mound tonight.
Arrieta, pitching for AAA Norfolk, was coming off his last start where he had 11 k’s in 7 innings. Tonight the right-handed pitcher went 6 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 er, 4 walks, with 4 k’s. While the lack of control was a bit disappointing, it is a good-sign that tonight would qualify as an ‘off’ start for Arrieta.
To start the year, he has now pitched a total of 31 innings, allowing 18 hits, 4 er, 14 walks, with 27 k’s. He has held opposing hitters to a .171 batting average.
Unlike Arrieta, Britton was looking to rebound from a poor outing his last time out. In his last start, Britton allowed 7 runs (4 earned) in 3.1 innings. Tonight, Britton would go just 5.1 innings, but only allowed 1 er on 6 hits, 2 walks, with 1 k. While the sample-size is limited, it is interesting that left-handed batters are hitting .314 against Britton so far in 2010.
Britton entered the game in the 2nd-inning, after Uehara got in his inning of work to start the game. Uehara had a scoreless inning for the 2nd-time, and seems ready for the next step in his rehab.
