As June ends, it is nice to see some signs of life from Jones and Wieters.
Heading to the 6th inning of today’s game, Wieters is 2 for 3, and Jones has added his 12th homer of the year (and 7th of the month).
This gives Wieters hits in 5 consecutive games, and 8 rbi during this stretch. What I really like seeing is that Wieters has had 5 walks during the past 4 games.
Jones of course has been steadily improving over a longer stretch. On May 6th, Jones went 0 for 4 in Minnesota and saw his OPS stand at just .597. Since that point, Jones has hits in 38 of the 46 subsequent games he has played. Entering play today, Jones had raised his OPS to .728. While his walk to strikeout ratio (8 to 63) is still frightening, it seems reasonable to believe that Jones will now finish the season with an OPS approaching his ’09 levels (.792).
