Earlier this week, the Baltimore Sun provided the transcript of Ed Reed’s interview with 105.7 FM.

In that interview, Reed stated that he has contacted the Ravens about a new contract. I’m struggling to come-up with a reason of why the Management at the Castle would agree to redo Reed’s contract.
The safety is signed through the 2012 season to a contract Reed agreed to in June 2006. Reed also stated to 105.7 FM that he is definitively coming back for this season, and might not be back until October (or later).
The Ravens have a player coming off hip-surgery who has told them he is going to play this year. This means the Ravens do not have to worry about Reed retiring and walking away prior to a year with Super Bowl aspirations.
The only bargaining power Reed has, is to say he might retire. Even then, Reed would have to be willing to walk away from the money still available to him on his contract. There is no way the Ravens can consider giving Reed a new contract until his health is proven. Even if/when that happens it probably does not make sense to give Reed any more money, when there are a number of younger players the team will be attempting to extend.
