Terps Redshirt Freshman QB Danny O’Brien was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for his play against Florida International.
Dealing with his own injuries, and making an unexpected start; it was an impressive outing for O’Brien. It is pretty evident that O’Brien is the more polished (and traditional drop-back) passer in comparison to Junior Jamarr Robinson. The fact that O’Brien is this comfortable in Maryland’s offense this early in his career, really bodes well for him.
I am feeling a bit conflicted here though as a Terps fan. O’Brien is receiving a lot of accolades for completing 18 of 27 passes for 250 yards, and 2 TD’s at-home against the Florida International. How is that any more impressive than what Robinson did at Florida State (20 of 27 for 213 yards passing, 1 TD, 58 yards rushing) last-year?
I acknowledge that O’Brien looks like the more comfortable ‘QB’, but Robinson is the superior athlete. This is not the NFL, this is College with spread offenses all the rage. I think it is an interesting question to ask who is better equipped to get the most out of the surrounding skill-position talent. You can easily make a logical case for that being O’Brien, but I think it would be mistake to totally write-off Robinson yet.
