With a trip to #1 Duke looming this Sunday night, the young Maryland Terrapins obliterated the over-matched Colgate Raiders 95-40.
With the win Maryland moves to 10-4 overall (0-1 in the ACC).
The Good:
1) After watching fellow Freshman Pe’Shon Howard start the two previous games, Terrell Stoglin received the first start of his collegiate career. Stoglin did not disappoint, hitting three 3’s, and finishing with 12 points and 4 assists.
2) Again, Bowie is clearly more comfortable playing off the ball. Looking more aggressive and decisive Bowie had 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.
3) Maryland set the defensive tone early, limiting Colgate to 4 points over the first 10 minutes.
4) At around the 12 minute mark of the 1st half the Terps (up 17-2), made wholesale changes to the lineup. Obviously part of it was playing a very limited opponent, but the intensity and performance of the starters during the first 8 minutes allowed Tucker, Padgett, Howard, Weijs, Palsson, and even Parker to come in and get some minutes.
5) Despite the lead, Maryland continued to play hard. Tucker made a great play saving an errant Howard throw. Up 41 points with under 5 minutes to play Gregory was crashing the boards.
6) 5 Terrapin players scored in double-figures.
7) Maryland dominated the boards 45 to 23, and also had 27 assists with their 38 made field-goals. Terps shot 52.1% from the floor, and held Colgate to 26.2%.
8) Howard did not sulk upon going back to the bench. He played one of his better games of the year, finishing with 7 points, 4 assists, 3 boards, and a steal.
9) Tucker had a stretch in the 2nd half where he racked-up 8 points in about 45 seconds. Overall he had 12 points, 4 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
10) Gregory and Mosley combined for 18 points, 11 boards, 6 assists, and 3 steals.
11) Terps were 9 of 21 from 3, and 10 of 12 at the foul-line.
The Bad & The Ugly:
None. Seriously what can I nitpick at tonight?
I am not going to get carried away by beating up on a now 1-12 Colgate. Obviously the Raiders could not match-up physically. Still, Maryland played hard tonight and won by 55.
Would be rather hard to complain about anything.
Up-Next:
The Terrapins will go from playing one of the worst Division 1 teams, to playing the defending National Champion Duke Blue Devils on their home-court.
After beating Miami 74-63 on Sunday, Duke is 13-0, and 1-0 in the ACC. They will host UAB tomorrow. Duke’s last loss was to Maryland on March 3rd. After that game, the Devils ran off 10 consecutive wins to take the ACC and National Tournaments.
So far this season Maryland has shown they can play with good teams on a neutral court (Pittsburgh, Illinois, Temple) but they were not able to earn a win in any of those games. While the Terps continue to progress, it is hard to imagine they are ready to go on the road in Durham and come away with the win.
That said, I am looking forward to the game and the opportunity that will be presented to the Terps.
