Then I believe the trade should be Roberts for Baltimore’s own Gavin Floyd, Getz, and either Lillibridge or Broadway (and honestly maybe both) with the WS getting a two day window to work on an extension.
Getz is not some uber prospect, and both Lillibridge and Broadway had more than their share of struggles in 2008.
Can not imagine that White Sox GM Ken Williams turns that down…
Even if Roberts will not sign an extension with Chicago, at a minimum I am getting Getz back with Floyd, or I am not making the deal.
Lillibridge, and Broadway are basically throw-ins…. If Williams makes the trade at all, he is doing so because he believes Roberts maks the WS a better team in 2009, and that is what he is playing for… If he is considering trading Floyd, he believes already he can off-set that loss to the rotation…. Broadway has roughly 60 AAA starts the last two years, and is depth…but not depth he is counting on producing….If he gets Roberts, Getz is obviously expendable…. And Lillibridge is never going to be the answer at SS for them, with G.Beckham in their system….
Really depends on how much Williams wants Roberts… for this trade to progress at all, I think it is clear he does…
Frankly, if I was Williams I would make the trade, even 4 for 1 if I had to… and roll the dice I could get Roberts to extend… and if not, I’ll take the draft picks… which maybe he values more anyway.

My first desire though would be to resign Roberts for 3 years (2010-12) and around $39M if possible.
I would have done the Cubs trade last year… I thought there was value there… That was the best offer we received, and that was when Roberts had 2 years left on his deal…. MacPhail said no to that trade… there is little reason to believe a better deal then that will be offered, with him now being 1 year older and closer to FA.
That leads a lot of people to saying, well just keep him through 2009, and take the draft picks you receive in return as compensation.
If you want to compete in 2010, and 2011 as I do… then I disagree with the notion that draft picks in return is better course of action…. if Roberts turned the extension offer, I would rather trade him for Floyd alone.
