Tough loss for MD tonight, as they had an opportunity late to pull the upset over the #10 ranked Deamon Deacons.
While a win would have likely punched MD’s ticket to the NCAA Tournament, this game did little to eliminate their chances.
If the Terps are able to win Saturday at Virginia, they will likely make the Tournament.
8-8 in the Nation’s Top Rated RPI conference, with wins over the ACC, and Big 10 Champions is an NCAAT worthy resume.
Knowing that, does not eliminate some of the dissapointment with the finish tonight.
Behind a zone-defense used for most of the 2nd-half, and four 3-pointers from Senior Dave Neal, the Terps almost found a way to win.
As I suspected, this was as tough a match-up for MD physically as they had faced all year. There really was no way for the Terps to compete on the boards, and Milbourne was made a complete non-factor.
Vasquez, tasked with chasing around Teague for large-portions of the night, just had a horrible offensive showing.
Yahoo currently says that MD lost on the boards 42-29, but I will not be surprised to see those numbers updated later.
Vasquez finished 7 for 24 from the floor, for 16 points, with 7 assists, and 5 rebounds.
Neal, on his Senior Night, finished with 19pts, and 8 boards.
Hayes played relatively well in reserve, but missed several critical 3pointers late.
Mosley had 6points, 6 boards, and 3 assists.
Perhaps the only other notable contribution, was the 4 points provided by Braxton Dupree in the 1st-half.
This game was truly lost by the Terps in-ability to get to the foul-line. MD was only able to get to the charity-stripe for 2 shots, compared to 17 opportunities for Wake.
MD has to turn their attention, and focus to UVA immediately. Did not get it done tonight, and that hurts… but the Terps showed again they were capable of competing with the nations best.
