When he was drafted, Keith Law said it would be a mistake for him to start at the lower levels of the minors, because Matusz’s ability to work backwards, and use his off-speed stuff will overwhelm young minor leaguers.

It had been my hope that Matusz would start at Bowie, but the O’s have given signs that he will likely start the year at Frederick.

If you read the quotes from Matusz of what he is trying to accomplish this spring, and how he handles himself – it is clear he has a certain level of maturity.
It is only a few innings of early spring work… but it is also clear he is not overwhelmed facing Major Leaguers.
If he starts the year at Frederick, advancing him to Bowie by late May should be a priority.
