As we approach the Division I football National Signing Day early period Dec. 18-20, Maryland has been quite active on the recruiting front of late, receiving seven verbal commitments in the last week as head coach Mike Locksley works vigorously to fill his 2020 class and roster for next year.

The Terps hosted a bevy of recruiting prospects last weekend and another large group is expected on campus in College Park this weekend as well. Of last weekend’s visitors, Maryland has already gotten on board four JUCO standouts from Independence C.C. (Kan.), a 6-foot-5, 315-pound offensive lineman from North Carolina, and two Florida prospects — a running back and a linebacker.

With the recent influx in numbers, Maryland’s 2020 class currently sits at 21 total commitments — five from the DMV area. The maximum number of players a Division I college football team can sign to a recruiting class is 25, but the Terps are shooting to bring in as many new players as they possibly can, so don’t be surprised to see Locksley & Co. hand out more than 30 new scholarships this offseason by bringing on several early enrollees. Early enrollees don’t count against the 25-player limit, and a handful of the Terps’ newcomers are expected to sign early and enroll in January.

Maryland’s 2020 recruiting class — which is currently ranked 35th in the country by Rivals.com —  is by no means finalized at this point, but most of the Terps’ pledges are expected to sign during the early period to make their commitment official.

A few of the more high-profile Terps’ pledges like Maryland’s top-rated 2020 prospect Ruben Hyppolite — a four-star linebacker out of Hollywood, Fla. — could opt to wait until the later National Signing Day — Feb. 5 — before officially ending his recruitment. Florida three-star defensive tackle Jerzhan Newton, Georgia three-star running back Ebony Jackson, and New Jersey three-stars Nick DeGennaro (wide receiver) and Tarheeb Still (defensive back) also could all wait until February to sign as they continue to draw heavy interest from other programs. However, Locksley should be able to lock up most, if not all, of his 2020 pledges with more on the way after another busy upcoming recruiting weekend.

The number of available scholarships Maryland has out of the maximum 85 is a fluid number at this point as current Terps on scholarship enter the transfer portal this offseason — many already have. But the consensus expectation is that Locksley will have more than enough room on his roster after some offseason attrition, and it’s likely we’ll see a full class by February with a number of early enrollees already on campus at that point.

Potential flips: Texas A&M four-star defensive end commit Fadil Diggs (Camden, N.J., Woodrow Wilson) is expected to be one of Maryland’s visitors this weekend as he takes his fifth and final official visit. Oklahoma four-star offensive tackle pledge Anton Harrison (Washington, D.C., Archbishop Carroll) is another committed prospect that is expected to pay the Terps a visit this weekend. Pittsburgh three-star wide receiver commit Jordan Addison (Frederick, Md., Tuscarora) is another local athlete that will be in College Park this weekend. USF three-star offensive guard commit Khris Love, who officially visited Maryland last weekend is another potential flip candidate for the Terps.

Maryland squarely in the mix: Two-star Florida defensive end Frankie Burgess recently re-opened his recruitment after being committed to USF and he will visit Maryland this weekend. His lead recruiter at Maryland, Brian Williams, has done a great job of establishing a strong relationship here. JUCO standout Jakorian Bennett is a three-star defensive back who has had his interest piqued by Maryland. He will be officially visiting with the Terps this weekend. More Independence C.C. recruits will also be in College Park this weekend to check out what Maryland has to offer. Locksley and his staff will be looking to make a strong push for Indy’s four-star offensive tackle Jeremy Flax and four-star defensive end DeAndre Butler. Three-star JUCO cornerback Geovonte Howard, who officially visited Maryland last weekend, is also squarely on the Terps’ radar and could commit before it’s all said and done.

Terps still trying, but work to be done: West Virginia four-star cornerback commit David Okoli is a Maryland native who could also visit College Park this weekend and ultimately flip to the Terps. However, the visit and a flip both seem far from a sure thing. Florida four-star wide receiver Bryan Robinson officially visited Maryland recently, but the Terps might have entered his recruitment to late to be considered a serious potential landing spot. JUCO three-star offensive guard Kobe Rios was supposed to officially visit College Park this weekend but he has run into some eligibility issues. He’ll no longer visit Maryland this weekend but he will likely be on the Terps’ radar for February’s signing day if he is cleared to play by then.
