2019 All-MPSSAA Football: Offense

Here are our 1st, 2nd, and Honorable Mention All-MPSSAA Offenses:

All-MPSSAA 1st Team:

QB Reese Poffenberger (Middletown) 5’9 160 SR – 211-334-2964-32-6, 13 rushing touchdowns >> Poffenberger led the Knights to the 2A state title, throwing 19-26 for 318 yards and four touchdowns in the 34-15 win over Potomac, a week after scoring the game-winning touchdown on a 15 yard run with 19 seconds to play in a 31-27 victory over Elkton in the state semifinal game.

Poffenberger’s 2,964 passing yards ranked 2nd in the MPSSAA, while his 32 touchdowns ranked 5th in the MPSSAA. Poffenberger threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns to go with his game-winner versus Elkton. Poffenberger threw 20-21 for 285 yards and five touchdowns in a 41-0 win over Tuscarora, and threw for 396 yards in a 28-21 loss to 3A runner-up Linganore.

Poffenberger’s 318 passing yards and four touchdowns in the state title game put him on top for the Offensive Player of the Year award, just ahead of Quince Orchard’s Marquez Cooper. Poffenberger accounted for more than 3,400 yards and 45 touchdowns for the Knights, who won their fourth state championship, to go with their ‘three-peat’ run from ‘09 to ‘11. Poffenberger holds offers from Old Dominion and Towson.

RB Carson Sickeri (Catoctin) 5’10 175 JR – 265-2369-8.9-36-41 >> Sickeri capped a phenomenal five-week post-season performance by rushing for 207 yards and a score, and adding an interception in the Cougars dominating 31-8 win over Dunbar in the 1A state title game. Sickeri rushed for 1,142 yards and scored 17 touchdowns in five post-season games, adding two interceptions, a fumble recovery, and a 98 yard kickoff return for a score.

Sickeri led the MPSSAA in rushing yards, with 2,369, and total touchdowns, with 41, and his 36 rushing scores ranked second in the MPSSAA behind Cooper, who finished with 37. In the 41-0 shutout of Fort Hill in the state semifinal, Sickeri rushed for 249 yards and three scores on 24 carries, while adding both an interception and a fumble recovery.

Sickeri began his post-season heroics with 234 rushing yards and three scores in a 53-6 win over Southern, followed by 171 rushing yards and three scores, including the 98 yard return, in a 47-6 rout of Boonsboro. Sickeri scored all six Cougars touchdowns and rushed for 281 yards in the 41-21 quarterfinal win over Fairmont Heights, before registering 456 rushing yards, two interceptions, a fumble recovery, and scoring four times in the wins over Fort Hill and Dunbar.

RB Marquez Cooper (Quince Orchard) 5’7 190 SR – 212-2038-9.6-37-38 >> Cooper rushed for more than 2,000 yards for the second straight year, becoming just the eighth back in MPSSAA history to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in two seasons. Cooper also finished his illustrious Cougars career second all-time in MPSSAA history in touchdowns scored, with 97.

Cooper led the MPSSAA in rushing touchdowns this season, with 37, and his 2,038 rushing yards ranked third in the state. Cooper was named Montgomery County 4A Most Valuable Player by the coaches, as well as the Washington Post All-Met 1st Team. Cooper rushed for 174 yards and a score in the 21-7 win over 3A state champ Damascus, and 243 yards and four scores in the 69-32 victory over Arundel in the quarterfinals. Cooper rushed for season-high 333 yards and four touchdowns versus Walter Johnson.

Cooper rushed for 38 touchdowns and scored 39 total in 2018, and followed that up with 37 rushing touchdowns and 38 in all in 2019, on 41 less carries. Cooper’s 5,258 career rushing yards ranks 8th all-time in MPSSAA history, and 94 rushing touchdowns rank second all-time, to Dunbar’s Tavon Austin. Cooper is headed to Kent State.

RB Xander McClure (Linganore) 5’9 180 JR – 275-2350-8.5-20-23 >> The Lancers advanced to the 3A state championship game behind their running attack, led by McClure, who finished second in the MPSSAA in rushing yards, with 2,350, and tied for 7th in touchdowns scored, with 23.

McClure rushed for 194 yards and a score on 30 carries in the Lancers thrilling 27-25 victory over Mervo in the state semifinals. McClure rushed for 281 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries in a win over Urbana. McClure rushed for 854 yards (213.5 ypg) in the Lancers four post-season wins. McClure also returned three kickoffs for scores this season.

WR Corey Dyches (Potomac) 6’2 190 SR – 54-1362-25.2-19-19 >> Dyches led the MPSSAA in both receiving yards and touchdown receptions, with 1,362 and 19, respectively. Dyches, a University of Maryland commit, was named to the Washington Post All-Met 1st team, a year after being named to the Honorable Mention team by the publication.

Dyches produced 8 receptions for a season-high 184 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Broadneck, 5 catches for 125 yards and three scores versus Largo, 5 receptions for 148 yards and a pair of scores in a win over C.M. Wright, then posted playoff figures of 4 receptions for 111 yards over Calvert, 6 catches for 112 yards and a score in the quarterfinal win over Milford Mill, and finishing his career with 97 receiving yards on three receptions in the state title game.

Dyches finished his Wolverines career with 2,874 receiving yards, 6th all-time in MPSSAA history, and 39 touchdown receptions, also 6th all-time in MPSSAA history. Dyches 137 receptions rank 14th all-time in MPSSAA history. Dyches 1,362 yards in 2019 rank 7th for a single-season, and 19 touchdowns rank tied for 5th.

WR Sean Leonard (South River) 6’2 190 SR – 61-1208-19.8-18-19 >> Leonard finished second on the MPSSAA in receptions, with 61, second in receiving yards, with 1,208, and second in touchdown receptions, with 18. Leonard was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Met 1st Team, and to the Washington Post All-Met 2nd Team. Leonard recorded 5 interceptions, 14 passes defended, and two fumble recoveries on defense.

Leonard had four receptions for 142 yards and a pair of scores in a win over Old Mill, adding both a fumble recovery and interception, and amassed 233 receiving yards and three touchdowns in a win over Severna Park. Leonard caught 8 passes for three touchdowns in the Seahawks 62-22 win over Annapolis.

Leonard’s 1,208 receiving yards in 2019 rank 12th all-time in MPSSAA history for a single-season, and his 18 touchdown receptions rank tied for 9th all-time for a single-season. Leonard received a preferred walk-on (PWO) offer from the University of Maryland.

OL  Ryan Linthicum (Damascus) 6’4 275 JR >> The Clemson commit was the lynchpin for the state champion Swarmin’ Hornets offense that averaged more than 8 yards per carry, 325 yards of offense per contest, and 42.4 points per game.

Linthicum, a 4-star prospect, is the top rated center in the country, and chose the offer from the Tigers over offers from LSU, Ohio State, Nebraska and Michigan, among others.

OL Santana Saunders (Flowers) 6’5 270 SR >> Saunders, a University of Maryland commit, paved the way for the Jaguars and their star back Tristan Shannon, who rushed for more than 1,400 yards, and their offensive unit, which produced 3,788 yards of offense.

Saunders was named to the Washington Post All-Met 2nd Team, and the All-Prince George’s County 1st Team. Saunders was selected to play in the Blue-Grey All-American Game.

OL Brian Hannibal (Blake) 6’3 290 SR >> Hannibal, a Liberty University commit, was named to the Washington Post Honorable Mention team for a second year in a row. The left tackle was named to the Montgomery 3/2A All-County 1st Team, also for a second straight year.

OL Isaiah Foote (Calvert) 6’3 285 SR >> Foote, a East Carolina commit, was named to the All-SMAC 1st team for a second year in a row, and was named to the Washington Post Honorable Mention team. Foote opened the way for Cavaliers running back Kameron Hawkins, who rushed for 1,307 yards in 11 games.

OL Stephan Nisewaner (Old Mill) 6’0 275 SR >> Nisewaner anchored the talented Patriots offensive line from the left guard position, and was named to the All-Anne Arundel County 1st team, registering 80 ‘pancakes’ in 13 games. Nisewaner, a state wrestling contender, ranks 2nd all-time on the Patriots weightlifting charts.

TE Drew Sotka (Glenelg) 6’0 195 SR >> Sotka was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Met 2nd Team at linebacker, and was named to the Howard County All-County 1st Team for a second year in a row. Sotka was a deft receiver, and the Gladiators and Kyle Dry often ran behind the three-year starter.

Sotka led the Gladiators in receiving from the tight end position, taking in 18 receptions for 263 yards and 6 touchdowns. On defense, Sotka added 68 tackles, 5 interceptions, two fumble recoveries, a safety, and scored three touchdowns. Sotka was also named to the Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention team as a linebacker.

ATH Jaliil Farooq (Wise) 6’1 190 JR – 31-718-23.2-11 rec, 65-688-10.6-11 rush, 24 tds >> The multi-talented Farooq was named to the Washington Post All-Met 1st Team as a defensive back, but was just as gifted with the ball, amassing 2,046 all-purpose yards and scoring 24 touchdowns on just 130 touches, helping lead the Pumas to the 4A state title.

Farooq caught 31 receptions for 718 yards, averaging 23.2 yards per catch, scoring 11 times through the air, while rushing for 688 yards and 11 touchdowns on just 65 carries, averaging 10.6 yards per carry. Farooq recorded 590 return yards, including a kickoff return for six, grabbed 3 interceptions, returned one for a score, defended 11 passed balls, and registered 35 tackles, five for a loss. Farooq averaged 31.3 yards per kickoff return, and 14.8 yards per punt return.

Farooq amassed 269 all-purpose yards and scored twice in a win over Oxon Hill, adding an interception, and notched 233 all-purpose yards and scored three times in a win over Northwestern. In the state title game, Farooq gained 100 yards from scrimmage, scored once, grabbed an interception, and did an outstanding job on the Cougars All-State receiver, Kaden Prather. Farooq is a 4-star prospect, and holds 25 offers, including LSU, Georgia, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others.

ATH Tayshawn Watters (Elkton) 5’10 190 SR – 154-1283-8.3-18 rush, 21-411-19.6-5 rec, 26 touchdowns >> Watters recorded 1,906 all-purpose yards and scored 26 touchdowns in all for the 12-1 Elks, adding 31 tackles, 5 interceptions – returning two for touchdowns, 3 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and returned a kickoff 82 yards for a score. To add, Watters hit on 5 of 7 pass attempts for 180 yards and three touchdowns.

Watters rushed for 1,283 yards and 18 touchdowns on 154 carries (11.8 per game), and his 26 touchdowns ranked third in the MPSSAA, behind only Catoctin’s Carson Sickeri and Quince Orchard’s Marquez Cooper. Watters rushed for 102 yards and a score, while adding an interception, in a 31-14 win over Oakdale. Watters scored five touchdowns and recorded 205 all-purpose yards in a 49-14 win over C.M. Wright.

Watters rushed for a season-high 197 yards and three scores in a 52-6 thumping of Harford Tech, then turned it up in the playoffs, scoring three times on 7 touches in a 35-6 win over North East, gained 237 all-purpose yards and scored twice, adding an interception in a 55-25 win over Parkside, rushed for 132 yards and scored twice in a 47-14 win over Liberty, then rushed for 140 yards, caught four passes for 40 yards, and caused a fumble and recovered it in the 31-27 heartbreaking semifinal loss to 2A state champ Middletown.

All-MPSSAA 2nd Team

QB Domonique Anthony (Potomac) 6’1 219 SR – 171-302-3262-39-9, 313 yards, 9 tds rush >> Anthony led the Wolverines to the 2A state title game, and led the MPSSAA in both passing yards, with 3,262, and touchdown passes, with 39. Overall, Anthony produced 3,575 yards of offense, and accounted for 48 touchdowns. Anthony was named to the Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention team.

Anthony threw for 338 yards and four scores in an opening week win over Broadneck, adding 105 rushing yards. Anthony threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns in the state quarterfinal win over Milford Mill, and scored the Wolverines only two touchdowns in the 16-6 state semifinal win over New Town, with a pair of scoring runs.

Anthony’s 6,928 career passing yards for the Wolverines ranks 6th all-time in MPSSAA history, while his 73 passing touchdowns rank 5th best all-time. Anthony’s 386 completions rank 13th best all-time in the MPSSAA. In all, Anthony accounted for 7,745 yards of offense, and 87 touchdowns in his Wolverines career. Anthony, a 3-star prospect and 83rd ranked pro style quarterback in the country, signed on to play for Old Dominion University.

RB T’Kai Ayoola (Richard Montgomery) 6’0 210 SR >> Ayoola was named to the Washington Post All-Met 2nd Team, as well as the Montgomery County 4A 1st Team, after rushing for more than 1,600 yards for a second year in a row for the Rockets.

Ayoola’s 1,611 rushing yards ranked 6th best in the MPSSAA this season, and his 19 rushing touchdowns ranked 8th best in the MPSSAA. Ayoola was named to his second consecutive All-MoCo 1st Team after rushing for 1,745 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2018. Ayoola finished his Rockets career with 3,765 rushing yards and 43 touchdowns.

Ayoola rushed for 297 yards and a pair of scores on 42 carries in a 15-12 win over Rockville, and 211 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-34 playoff win over Walter Johnson. Ayoola ran for four scores on just 8 carries in a 54-14 rout of Wooton. Ayoola has a preferred walk-on (PWO) offer from the University of Maryland, as well as another from Frostburg St..

RB Delvin Johnson (South River) 5’8 150 JR – 203-1477-7.3-14-17, 10-170-3 rec, 17 touchdowns >> Johnson was a top playmaker for the Seahawks, who featured the fourth highest scoring team in the MPSSAA this season, averaging 43.9 points per game. Johnson’s 1,477 rushing yards ranked 8th best in the MPSSAA.

Johnson, a junior, was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Met 1st Team, the Anne Arundel All-County 1st Team, as well as to the Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention team. Johnson rushed for 234 yards and two scores in a win over Broadneck, 196 yards and three touchdowns versus South River, and rushed for 227 yards and two scores, while adding 94 receiving yards and a pair of touchdown receptions in a win over Westminster.

RB Tristan Shannon (Flowers) 5’8 180 SR – 177-1437-8.1-19-20 >> Shannon, who was named to the Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention team, led Prince George’s 4A division in rushing yards, with 1,437, as well as rushing touchdowns, with 19. Shannon ranked 12th in the MPSSAA rushing yards for the Jaguars, and tied for 8th in rushing touchdowns.

Shannon rushed for 181 yards and two scores versus Oxon Hill, and 175 yards and a score in a regular season 16-0 win over Bowie. In the playoffs, Shannon rushed for 218 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Parkdale, and rushed for 196 yards and three scores in the Jaguars second meeting with Bowie.

WR Kaden Prather (Northwest) 6’3 200 JR – 42-895-21.3-9-9 >> Prather was named to the Washington Post All-Met 1st Team, as well as to the Montgomery County 4A 1st Team by the coaches, after producing 42 catches for 895 yards and 9 scores, all while getting double-coverage for much of the year. Prather caught 6 passes for 101 yards in the state championship loss to Wise.

Prather caught 3 passes for 113 yards and a score in a win over Richard Montgomery, and four passes for 148 yards and a score in a victory over Gaithersburg. In a playoff win over Clarksburg, Prather gathered in 123 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions on three touches.

Prather, a 4-star prospect and 49th rated receiver in the 2021 class, has offers from Alabama, Ohio State, and Penn State, among the twenty offers he’s received.

WR Brian Walker (Middletown) 6’5 190 SR – 48-930-19.4-17-17 >> Walker was a monster for the state champion Middletown Knights, producing big plays on both sides of the ball. Walker’s 930 receiving yards ranked 7th in the MPSSAA, while his 17 touchdown receptions ranked 3rd best in the MPSSAA, and tied for 11th best all-time in the history of the association.

Walker caught 4 receptions for 92 yards and a score in the state championship win over Potomac. Walker produced 5 receptions for 132 yards and a pair of scores in a win over Boonsboro, and 4 receptions for 164 yards and a score in a 28-21 loss to 3A runner-up Linganore.

WR Ryan Beach (Northwest) 5’6 160 SR – 50-942-18.8-15-16 >> Beach put together the best season among all slot receivers in the MPSSAA, and was named to the Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention team. Beach’s 15 touchdown receptions ranked 4th best in the MPSSAA this season.

Beach was deadly in the short passing game and jet sweep, as well as over the top, to add to one of the best kick return games in the state. Beach caught 50 passes, tied for 10th best in the MPSSAA, for 942 yards, 6th best among public school players in the state. Beach caught 22 passes for 434 yards and five scores in the post-season, including 6 receptions for 159 yards and a score in the Jags state title game loss to Wise.

OL Isaiah Lewis (Franklin) 6’1 300 SR >> Lewis was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Met 2nd Team, causing havoc at both the left tackle and defensive tackle positions for the Indians. Lewis paved the way for the Indians offense that averaged 371.3 yards per game. Lewis held his own versus the top player in the country, Damascus’ Bryan Bresee, in the Indians quarterfinal loss to the Swarmin’ Hornets.

OL Patrick Almony (Westminster) 6’2 310 SR >> Almony was the second best center in the MPSSAA, behind Clemson commit, Ryan Linthicum, and was named to the Carroll County All-County 1st Team for a second consecutive year. Almony was named to the BTC ‘Super 22’ team, and was invited to the Crab Bowl.

OL Diego Turcios (Quince Orchard) 6’3 295 SR >> Turcios was named to the Washington Post Honorable Mention team, as well as the Montgomery County 4A 1st Team by the coaches. Turcios was the leader of a line that helped the Cougars amass 330 yards and 45.2 points per game. Turcios holds offers from Kent State and Delaware State, among others.

OL Scott Hummel (Linganore) 6’4 285 SR >> Hummel, a state wrestling contender and All-County 1st team selection in 2018, created holes from the left guard position for the 3A runner-up Lancers, for an offense that averaged nearly 300 rushing yards per game.

OL Kamrin Porter (Wise) 6’2 320 SR >> Porter was a two-way standout on the line for the 4A state champion Pumas, delivering pancakes at the offensive tackle position, and creating pressure up the middle on the defensive line. Porter’s Pumas averaged 326.4 yards of offense per game, averaging 47.2 points per game.

ATH Michael Gray (Lake Clifton) 5’11 180 SR >> Gray did everything for the Lakers, starting at receiver before displaying his playmaking ability at the quarterback position, while being a lock-down corner and dynamic kick returner.

Gray accounted for 31 touchdowns and more than 2,300 yards for the Lakers, and finished as the program’s all-time touchdown leader, with 79. Nothing showcased Gray’s incredible talent than the outstanding performance he put on in week 11 versus Dunbar, where he accounted for 5 touchdowns and 306 yards in the Lakers 42-38 loss to the Poets.

ATH Jordan Addison (Tuscarora) 5’11 170 SR >> Addison was a one-man show for the under-manned Titans, lining up as one of the most talented receivers in the state, playing in the backfield when need be, while being one of the most electrifying return men in the area. The University of Pittsburgh commit accounted for 17 touchdowns for the Titans, including 8 touchdown receptions, 6 rushing touchdowns, and returning three kicks for scores. Addison averaged 21.8 yards per reception this season.

Addison caught 9 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns, while adding two interceptions in a win over 9-win South Hagerstown. Addison scored five touchdowns versus North Hagerstown, three receiving, one rushing, and another on a kick return. Addison, one of the top track talents in the state, chose Pittsburgh over another dozen offers, including those from Notre Dame and Michigan, among others.

All-MPSSAA Honorable Mention

QB David Foust (South River) 6’4 175 SR – 163-257-2781-34-4 >> Foust was named as Anne Arundel County Player of the Year, while also winning the Rhodes Memorial Trophy, awarded by the Touchdown Club of Annapolis to the county’s most outstanding player. Foust ranked first in the MPSSAA in passing yards per game, averaging 252.8 yards per clip, and finished second in touchdowns, with 34.

Foust led the Seahawks to a 9-0 regular season record, winning the Anne Arundel County title. Foust threw 5 touchdown passes in a win over Annapolis, and 313 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Westminster.

QB Austin Slye (Arundel) 5’11 170 SR – 228-355-2779-33-8 >> Slye led the MPSSAA in completions, with 228, third in touchdown passes, with 34, and finished fourth in passing yards, with 2,779.

Slye threw 30 completions for 317 yards and three touchdowns in a regular season loss to South River, before throwing for 254 yards and two touchdowns in the Wildcats upset win over the Seahawks in the second round of the playoffs. Slye threw 22-32 for 307 yards and four touchdowns versus North Point, and 23-33 for 306 yards and four touchdowns versus Broadneck.

QB Josh Forburger (Walter Johnson) 6’1 190 SR – 160-37-2196-22-4, 3 rushing tds >> Forburger was named as the Montgomery County 4A Offensive Player of the Year, throwing for 2,196 yards, with 22 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions, completing 67.5% of his passes.

The Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention selection threw for four touchdowns in a win over Urbana, and completed 18 of 19 passes and four touchdowns versus Bethesda Chevy Chase. Forburger threw for 210 yards against Quince Orchard, and ran for 71 yards in the loss.

QB Nolan Null (Elkton) 6’0 160 SR – 127-201-2444-29-7 >> Null helped lead the Golden Elks to a 12-1 record and a UCBAC Chesapeake title, throwing for 2,444 yards and 29 touchdowns. Null ranked 8th in the MPSSAA in passing yards, and 7th in touchdowns.

The Cecil County All-County 1st Team quarterback stepped up in the playoffs, throwing for 249 yards and four touchdowns versus Parkside, 336 yards and five touchdowns versus Liberty, and completed 21 passes for 282 yards in the heart-breaking loss to eventual 2A state champion Middletown.

QB Jordan Morse (Northwest) 6’1 180 JR – 136-205-2519-33-NA, 5 rushing touchdowns >> Morse directed the Jaguars to the 4A state title game, throwing for 2,519 yards and 33 touchdowns, ranking 6th in passing yards, and tied for 4th in touchdowns.

In the 4A state championship game, Morse threw 18-26 for 304 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the loss. Versus Richard Montgomery, Morse completed 13 of 15 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, and also ran for a score.

QB Dylan Monday (Rockville) 5’10 175 SR – 1,503 yards, 15 tds passing, 1,042 yards, 9 tds rushing >> Monday was named Montgomery County 2/3A Offensive Player of the Year after helping lead the Rams to a 9 win season. Monday, who also played cornerback, was the only player in the MPSSAA this season to pass for 1,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards.

Monday accounted for 2,545 yards and 24 touchdowns for the Rams, throwing for 1,503 yards and 15 touchdowns, rushing for 1,042 yards and 9 touchdowns. Monday was named to the Washington Post Honorable Mention team.

QB Kelin Kimbrough (Mervo) 5’11 180 SR – NA-NA-1898-26-NA >> Kimbrough helped lead the Mustangs to the 3A state semifinals and a 12-1 record, accounting for more than 2,600 yards of offense and 38 touchdowns. Kimbrough ranked 10th in the MPSSAA in passing touchdowns, with 28.

Kimbrough threw for 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and ran for a score in the Mustangs 20-14 win over Dunbar. Kimbrough threw for two touchdowns in the Mustangs 16-6 quarterfinal win over Westminster, and 220 yards and two touchdowns in the Mustangs 27-25 loss to Linganore in the state semifinals.

QB Nate Kent (Liberty) 6’2 190 SR – 142-259-2330-23-11, 870 yards, 9 tds rushing >> Kent was named Carroll County Player of the Year for a second consecutive season, accounting for 3,200 yards of offense, and 32 touchdowns.

Kent, who was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Met 2nd Team, three for 260 yards and three touchdowns in the Lions 35-28 playoff win versus Glenelg, adding 89 rushing yards and a score in the victory.

QB Kai Castle (Oakland Mills) 5’9 170 SR >> 243-1571-6.5-21-21 rushing, 26-57-229-3-1 >> Castle was named the Howard County Offensive Player of the Year, leading the county in both rushing yards and touchdowns, with 1,571 rushing yards, and scoring 21 touchdowns. Castle is the third Scorpions to win the county’s OPOY, joining David Pindell (‘14) and Tre Hopkins (‘15). Castle also had 15 pancake blocks from the quarterback position.

Castle rushed for 310 yards and scored five touchdowns in a win over Reservoir, and 211 yards and three scores on 15 carries in a 56-28 win over Wilde Lake. In a playoff loss to Liberty, Castle rushed for 169 yards and two scores on 18 carries. Castle joins a long line of Scorpions quarterbacks that could do it on the ground, joining Chet Gee (Duke), Tony Coates (Northwestern), Marcus Lewis (Delaware), JT Rembert (Marshall), and Pindell (UConn), among others.

QB Robert Montgomery (Oxon Hill) 5’9 185 JR – 142-231-2601-25-7 >> Montgomery, a junior, was named to the Prince George’s County 4A 1st team after throwing for 2601 yards and 25 touchdowns for the Clippers. Montgomery ranked second in the MPSSAA in passing yards per game, averaging 236.5 yards per game, and 11th in touchdown passes.

Montgomery threw for 333 yards and 6 touchdowns in a win over Eleanor Roosevelt, and threw 16-23 for 246 yards and a pair of scores versus Flowers.

QB Vernon Brown (Franklin) 5’10 180 SR – 118-210-2018-29-9, 3 rushing touchdowns >> Brown threw for 2,018 yards and 29 touchdowns for the Indians, finishing 7th in the MPSSAA in touchdown passes.

Brown threw 18-23 and 5 touchdowns in a win over Dundalk, and 13-19 for 175 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-7 win over Milford Mill.

QB Ryan O’Connor (Easton) 6’2 165 JR – 168-293-2336-28-8, 260 yards, 6 tds rushing >> O’Connor was named the Bayside Conference Offensive Player of the Year, finishing 9th in the MPSSAA in touchdown passes, with 28, and 8th in passing yards, with 2,336.

O’Connor threw 18-22 for 302 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Decatur, and threw 21-37 for 284 yards and three scores in a win over Cambridge South Dorchester. O,Connor, just a junior, has thrown for 52 touchdowns in two years, becoming just the second to player to throw for 50 career touchdowns (Stevie Curran, Kent Island ‘13-15, 71) in Bayside Conference history.

QB Jayden Sauray (Wise) 5’11 190 SO – 91-140-1988-30-5, 402 yards, 11 tds rushing >> The sophomore sensation Sauray directed the 4A state champion Pumas potent offensive attack, throwing for 30 touchdowns, and rushing for 11 scores.

The Washington Post All-Met Honorable Mention selection threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns in the state title game win versus Northwest, while adding a pair of rushing touchdowns. Sauray threw 10-13 for 219 yards and four scores in a win over Bowie, and 7-10 for 164 yards and four touchdowns in the state semifinal win over Old Mill.

QB Trent Connolly (Huntingtown) 5’10 175 SR – 83-160-1660-24-1, 513 yards, 11 tds rushing >> Connolly helped lead the Hurricanes to the 3A state semifinals and a 12-1 record, throwing 24 touchdowns, with only one interception. In all, Connolly accounted for 35 touchdowns, running for 11 scores.

Connolly threw for 179 yards and three scores on a win over St Charles, and threw for a touchdown and ran for a touchdown in a win over North Point. In the state semifinal versus eventual state champion Damascus, Connolly threw 5-8 for 153 yards and a score, and ran for a touchdown, in the first half, before leaving due to an injury.

RB Carson Snyder (Fort Hill) 5’11 210 SR – NA-1327-NA-25-25 through 11 gms >> Snyder was the Sentinels leading rusher and leading tackler, and rushed for 25 touchdowns, finishing third in the MPSSAA in that category. Through 11 games, Snyder registered 1,327 rushing yards and 112 tackles (48 solo).

Snyder rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns in the Sentinels 38-0 ‘Homecoming’ win over Allegany. Snyder rushed for three scores in a win over Williamsport.

RB Jordan Andrews (Arundel) 5’10 180 SR – 256-1452-5.7-15-15 >> Andrews was selected to the Anne Arundel All-County 1st Team, finishing 9th in the MPSSAA in rushing yards, with 1,452.

Andrews rushed for 143 yards and three scores on 25 carries in the Wildcats upset playoff win over South River. In the post-season victory over Broadneck, Andrews rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries. Andrews rushed for four scores in a win over Chesapeake.

RB Jamal Lone (Fairmont Heights) 5’11 205 SR – 182-1765-8.7-23-23 >> Lone was named to the Prince George’s All-County 3/2/1A 1st Team after rushing for 1,765 yards, 4th best in the MPSSAA, and 23 touchdowns, also 4th best in the MPSSAA.

Lone rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in the Hornets 41-21 playoff loss at Catoctin. In two games versus Friendly, Lone rushed for 223 yards in the first meeting, then 214 and three touchdowns in the Hornets playoff win over the Patriots. Lone also rushed for 221 yards and three scores versus Largo.

RB Khalik Beasley (Cambridge South Dorchester) 5’9 160 SR – 170-1488-8.8-20-21 >> Beasley was selected to the Bayside Conference 1st Team after finishing 8th in the MPSSAA in rushing yards, with 1,488. Beasley also picked off four interceptions for the Vikings.

Beasley rushed for 447 yards and 6 touchdowns in four playoff games, including 92 yards on 15 carries in the state semifinal loss to Dunbar. Beasley rushed for 148 yards and three scores in the regular season finale versus Easton.

RB Kelvin Mendez (Harford Tech) 5’6 160 SO – 187-1702-9.1-13-14 >> Mendez had an outstanding sophomore campaign, finishing 5th in the MPSSAA in rushing yards, with 1,702, and 4th in rushing yards per game, at 154.7 per clip. Mendez also added 11 receptions for 269 yards (24.5 ypr) and a touchdown reception.

Mendez rushed for 248 yards and a touchdown in a win over Edgewood, 232 yards and three scores in a playoff win over Easton, and 137 yards on 16 carries in the Cobras playoff loss to North Caroline. Mendez rushed for a season-high 247 yards and three touchdowns in a victory over Patterson Mill. On defense, Mendez added 65 tackles, 11 for loss, and two fumble recoveries.

RB Chris Shaw (Damascus) 5’10 178 JR – 132-1136-8.6-22-25 >> Shaw was named to the Montgomery County 3/2A All-County 1st Team after serving as the leading rusher for the 3A state champion Swarmin’ Hornets, rushing for 22 scores, 5th best in the MPSSAA, and scoring 25 touchdowns in all, tied for 4th in the MPSSAA.

Shaw rushed for 134 yards on 11 carries in the state championship win over Linganore, a week after scoring two touchdowns in the Hornets 21-14 win over Huntingtown in the state semifinals. Shaw scored a pair of touchdowns in the quarterfinal win over Franklin, including taking a pass 82 yards to begin the second half. Shaw scored three touchdowns versus South Hagerstown.

RB Kyle Dry (Glenelg) 5’7 165 SR – 231-1424-7.2-15-15 >> Dry was selected to the Baltimore Sun All-Met 1st Team after finishing 12th in the MPSSAA in rushing yards, while adding 350 yards on kick returns. Dry also started three years at cornerback for the Gladiators.

In the Gladiators playoff loss to Liberty, Dry rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, and rushed for 160 yards and a pair of scores in a playoff win over Century. In the regular season, Dry rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Long Reach, and 147 yards in a score versus Wilde Lake.

RB Jonathan Thompson (Lackey) 5’10 197 SR – 181-1447-8.0-19-19 >> Thompson was selected to the All-SMAC 1st Team after finishing 5th in the MPSSA in rushing yards per game, with 160.8 per contest.

Thompson rushed for 253 yards and two scores in a win over Thomas Stone, 238 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Calvert, and 219 yards and two scores in a win over Westlake. Thompson added 34 tackles on defense.

RB Daniel Frink (Edmondson) 6’1 180 SR – official stats not available >> Frink led the Baltimore City league in rushing, with more than 1,300 yards on the ground, and was named to the All-League 1st Team. Frink rushed for a MPSSAA post-season best of 327 yards and four touchdowns in the Red Storm’s win over Francis Scott Key.

RB Ethan Holobinko (Boonsboro) 5’9 200 SR >> Holobinko was named Washington County Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 1,180 yards and 20 touchdowns for the Warriors. Holobinko ranked tied for 5th in the MPSSAA in rushing touchdowns.

Holobinko added 74 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception on defense. Holobinko rushed for 3,094 yards and scored 294 points in his Warriors career, 9th and 3rd, respectively, in county history.

WR Malik Baker (Oxon Hill) 5’11 200 JR – 47-1101-23.4-11-14 >> Baker was selected to the Prince George’s County 4/3A All-County 1st Team after finishing 3rd in the MPSSAA in receiving yards, and was named to the Washington Post Honorable Mention team. Baker averaged 23.4 yards per catch, with 47 receptions. Baker also returned two punt returns for touchdowns.

Baker snatched 8 receptions for 191 yards and two touchdowns versus Suitland, made three catches for 110 yards and a score in a loss to Wise, had four receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown versus North Point, and three receptions for 131 yards and a pair of scores in a win over Eleanor Roosevelt.

WR TJ Lowery (Harford Tech) 6’3 190 SR – 58-1087-18.7-9-9 >> Lowery was a two-way standout for the 9 win Cobras and was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Met 2nd Team after finishing 3rd in the MPSSAA in receptions, with 58, and 4th in receiving yards, with 1,087.

On defense, Lowery made 144 tackles, 12 for loss, and recovered three fumbles. In a playoff win over Easton, Lowery had 9 receptions for 176 yards and a score, and added 18 tackles on defense.

WR Grant Copper (Easton) 6’2 195 JR >> Copper was named to the Bayside Conference All-League team at both wide receiver and cornerback, finishing 6th in the MPSSAA in touchdown receptions, with 13.

Copper picked off four interceptions for the Warriors, returning one for a touchdown. Copper caught 8 passes for 118 yards and two scores in a playoff loss to Harford Tech, and made five receptions for 108 yards and a score in the double-overtime regular season finale win over Cambridge South Dorchester.

WR Anthony Smith (Huntingtown) 6’2 190 SR – 35-918-26.2-14-14 >> Smith, who was named to the Washington Post Honorable Mention team, finished 5th in the MPSSAA in touchdown receptions, with 14, and 7th in receiving yards, with 918. Smith also led the MPSSAA (min. 20 receptions) in yards per reception, at 26.2 per clip.

Smith caught four passes for 151 yards and two scores in a win over Patuxent, and caught two passes for 113 yards in the state quarterfinal loss to Damascus, including scoring on a 95 yard pass play. Smith, a 3-star receiver, will be part of the North Carolina State Wolfpack next Fall.

WR Kyree Williams (Mervo) 5’10 160 SR – 54-853-15.4-13-14 >> Williams was named to the Baltimore City All-League 1st Team after leading the league in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Williams 13 touchdown receptions ranked tied for 6th in the MPSSAA in touchdown receptions.

WR Jaden Byrd (Oxon Hill) 5’10 165 SR – 50-955-19.1-11-11 >> Byrd was named to the Prince George’s 4A All-County 1st Team, as well as to the Washington Post Honorable Mention team, after hauling in 50 receptions for 955 yards and 11 touchdowns. Byrd ranked 5th in the MPSSAA in receiving yards, and tied for 9th in touchdown receptions, with 11.

Byrd made 5 receptions for 153 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Eleanor Roosevelt, four receptions for 144 yards and a score in a win over Bladensburg, and 7 receptions for 112 yards in a loss to Wise.

WR Travis Fields (Catoctin) 5’10 175 SR – 40-892-22.3-11-NA >> Fields was a two-way standout for the 1A state champion Cougars, finishing second in Frederick County in both receiving yards and touchdown receptions. Fields also added 5 interceptions on defense.

In the state championship win over Dunbar, Fields caught two passes for 53 yards and two touchdowns, and in a playoff win over Boonsboro, caught a pair of touchdown receptions, rushed for a 80 yard score, and added two interceptions.

WR Michael Spitz (Liberty) 5’11 180 SR – 56-909-16.2-7-7 >> Spitz was Nate Kent’s top target for the Lions, and was named to Carroll County’s All-County 1st team after leading the county in receptions, with 56, receiving yards, with 909, and touchdown receptions, with 7. Spitz finished 5th in the MPSSAA in receptions, and 9th in receiving yards.

OL Jermaine Gilliam (Mervo) 6’1 245 JR >> Gilliam had an outstanding junior season at right tackle for the Mustangs, and was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Met 2nd Team. Gilliam was a big part of a Mustangs team that averaged 36 points and more than 300 yards per game.

OL Zaire Cooper (Blair) 6’3 287 SR >> Cooper was selected to the Montgomery County 4A All-County Team by the coaches, playing left tackle for the Blazers. Cooper holds offers from Davidson, Morgan State, and Marist, among seven offers.

OL Chris Adams (South Hagerstown) 6’3 240 JR >> Adams, a junior, was instrumental on both sides of the ball for the Rebels, who won 9 games this season. Adams was selected to the Washington County All-County 1st Team as both a left tackle and a defensive tackle. Adams made 13 tackles for loss and forced two fumbles, and helped pave the way for the Rebels to rush for more than 240 yards per game.

OL Patrick Diomi (Northwest) 6’0 245 SR >> Diomi was selected to the Montgomery County 4A All-County 1st Team as an offensive lineman. Diomi, who played at both right and left tackle, also played defensive tackle for the 4A runner-up Jaguars.

OL Matt McCorkle (Arundel) 6’4 280 SR >> McCorkle was named to the Anne Arundel All-County 1st Team, serving as left tackle for the Wildcats, who amassed more than 4,000 yards this season, and averaged 38.3 points per game. McCorkle also played defensive tackle for the ‘Cats.

OL Jake Marcus (Old Mill) 6’4 230 SR >> Marcus was selected to the BTC ‘Super 22’ team after playing left tackle, defensive tackle, and serving as the long-snapper for the 4A semifinalist Patriots. Marcus did not allow a sack this season.

OL Eddie Kargbo (Paint Branch) 6’1 240 SR >> Kargbo was named to the Montgomery County 4A All-County 1st Team as an offensive lineman, playing guard, while also playing nose guard for the Panthers, who allowed less than 10 points or game.

OL Tre Smith (Mountain Ridge) 6’2 285 SR >> Smith, a 3-star defensive tackle prospect, was selected to the Washington County All-County 1st Team, dominating on both sides of the line. Smith is committed to the University of Maryland.

OL Rashard Jackson (Wise) 5’11 290 SR >> Jackson was named to the Prince George’s County 4A All-County 1st Team as an interior lineman for the Pumas, who led the MPSSAA in scoring, averaging 45.8 points per game, who amassed 5,013 yards this season. Jackson also caught an interception and retuned it for six, and blocked a field goal attempt.

OL Hunter Joeckle (South River) 6’0 275 SR >> Joeckle was selected to the Anne Arundel County All-County 1st Team as an offensive tackle for the Seahawks, who averaged 43.9 points per game, and averaged more than 400 yards of offense per game.

ATH Jamar Jones (South Hagerstown) 6’1 195 SR >> Jones was named Washington County Defensive Player of the Year, playing linebacker, but was also instrumental as the Rebels tight end, for an offensive unit that averaged more than 240 rushing yards per game.

Jones caught 10 passes for 140 yards and four scores to add to his blocking prowess on offense, and added 61 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, forced a fumble, returned an interception for a touchdown, returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and scored on a punt block.

ATH Eric Kolar (Urbana) 5’11 185 JR >> Despite missing three games due to an ankle injury, Kolar put together one of the best seasons in Frederick County, placing among the top 5 in rushing yards and touchdowns, and placing among the top 10 in receiving yards. The Hawks junior, a University of Maryland lacrosse commit, averaged 120.3 rushing yards per game, 64.2 receiving yards per game, and scored 16 touchdowns, including 9 rushing and 6 receiving.

In a win over Tuscarora, Kolar totaled 397 yards, including 250 rushing yards on 28 carries, 147 receiving yards on four receptions, and scored five touchdowns. Kolar rushed for 200 yards in a win over Clarksburg, and caught a pair of touchdown passes in a win over Glenelg.

ATH Tra Thomas (Old Mill) 6’4 208 SR >> Thomas served wherever Patriots Coach Chad McCormick asked him to, including at linebacker, where he could rush the passer, or cover a back or tight end, and on offense, as a blocker, runner, or receiver.

Thomas was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Met 2nd Team after recording 64 tackles, forced three fumbles, and returned an interception for a touchdown. The three-year player also scored on a trio of two-point conversions.

ATH Zach Igwebe (River Hill) 5’10 190 JR >> Igwebe was named to the Howard County All-County 1st Team as a linebacker, but also finished third in the county in rushing yards, and led the Hawks in touchdowns scored for the co-county champions.

Igwebe rushed for 967 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Hawks, and added 68 tackles – 5 for loss, and forced a pair of fumbles.

ATH Joey Bruscia (Linganore) 5’10 220 SR >> Bruscia served as a 220 pound Swiss Army knife for the 3A runner-up Lancers, lining up at inside linebacker, fullback, and quarterback. At linebacker, Bruscia was a bruising linebacker, while at fullback, helped lead Xander McClure to 2,350 rushing yards, and added more than 400 passing yards for the run-heavy Lancers.

ATH Ronnie Satchell (Wicomico) 5’8 160 SR >> Satchell was named as the Bayside Conference Special Teams Player of the Year, while also serving at running back, slot, and defensive back for the Indians. Satchell returned four kicks for scores this season.
