Good reporting from MASN’s Steve Melewski to directly address this long-standing rumor.
I had hoped that Rowell would have gotten the chance to play Winter Ball, and stay at 3rd for the 2009 season… but the important thing to worry about now is his development with the bat during the upcoming year.
Rowell has had 922 Professional at-bats… and while I expect he will spend the entire 2009 season in Frederick…. my goal would be 250 at-bats at Frederick through June 2009, 200 at-bats at Bowie through August 2009, 150 at-bats next Winter in the Dominican… 250 at-bats at Bowie through June 2010… with a possible Major League Debut July 2010, a few months before his 22nd bday.
By my plan, Rowell would receive another 850 Minor League / Professional at-bats before his Major League call-up… which would be double his current level of professional experience.
For this to be plausible, he has to produce in his 2nd go-around in the Carolina league this year.
For his Minor League career, he has averaged 1XBH per 10.3 at-bats… including 1XBH per 12 at-bats in 2008. You need to see that number improve this year.
He also finished 2008 with 104 k’s, and just 36 walks… looking for a more even split in 2009.
