Very encouraging outing by Brad Bergesen tonight in his Major League debut.
Bergesen went 5.2 innings, allowing 4hits, 1 er, with 2 walks, and 4 k’s.
I was impressed with Bergesen’s demeanor on the mound, and his desire to work quick. We knew from his Minor League stats, that this was a guy capable of throwing strikes, and he accomplished that tonight.
While his fastball consistently sat at around 89 mph, he surprised me by occassionally hitting as high as 94. More importantly, even at 89 – his fastball showed good life, with movement.
The White Sox started making adjustments to Bergesen their 2nd time through the lineup, with all of their veteran hitters… but to his credit, Bergesen did not fold.
It will be interesting to see Bergesen get through 5-7 starts, as the American League adjusts to him, and he adjusts back.
Nick Markakis is putting on a clinic with 4 hits in 4 at-bats, and Huff had a monster 2-run shot on Eutaw Street.
Luis Montanez had a clutch double in the bottom of the 6th, for his first Major League hit of 2009.
Chris Ray came on for the top of the 7th, and quickly got out of the inning.
Izturis has added two additional runs, with a double in the bottom of the 7th.
If the O’s can close out the game tonight, they will hand Bergesen his first Major League win, and get back to .500 overall at 7-7.
