River Hill @ Atholton – Matchup of Howard County’s last two unbeaten teams. The Raiders have outscored their five opponents, 136-20, while the Hawks hold a 168-26 margin over their five foes thus far. These two met last year in week six, with both coming in at 4-1, before the Raiders pulled out a 14-7 victory.
The last time the Raiders were 5-0 was 2009, the first of a four year period that the Hawks and Raiders were the top two teams in the league, during Kyle Schmitt’s time on Freetown Road. The ‘09 Raiders went 8-0 before suffering their first loss of the season to the Hawks, 35-14.
In 2011, the Raiders had to forfeit their opener due to an illegal practice session, but won all nine regular season games they played on the field, including a 14-0 shutout at River Hill. The Raiders and Hawks split their four regular season games from ‘09-12, but the Hawks got the better of their county rivals in the regional final in both ‘09, ‘11 and ‘12.
Hawks coach Brian Van Deusen is in his 23rd season in Clarksville, and his 207 career wins are the most among active coaches in the Baltimore are, #2 among active coaches in the MPSSAA, and ranks 18th all-time in Maryland public school history. Van Deusen is three wins away from tying Ben Wright (Eleanor Roosevelt, Thomas Johnson) for 15th in the list. Raiders coach Eric Woodson is in his third season with the Raiders, and his 18th overall after time at Northwestern (Balt.) and Parkdale, and holds a 89-84 career record.

Willie has contributed to Max Preps, Digital Sports, and Varsity Sports Network. Willie has produced MPSSAA top 25 rankings for both football and basketball for 15 years, across various platforms. From a large ‘sports family’, Willie’s brother Mike led Reservoir High to the 3A basketball state title game in 2018, while his nephew Anthony serves as the Indianapolis Colts College Scouting Coordinator.
