#1 Texas went down at home, and Alabama has two losses before November.
Let’s review Week 8, and look ahead to Week 9.
Week 8 Quick Hits
Oregon 35 Purdue 0 – Purdue is a bad team, but they did put up 49 points last week vs. a ranked Illinois team on the road. This week, they are held scoreless at home vs. the Ducks.
BYU 38 Oklahoma State 35 – The Cougars pulled out a 3 point win, and moved to 7-0 overall, and 4-0 in the Big 12.
Georgia 30 Texas 15 – Georgia’s Kirby Smart said he felt Georgia was disrespected, with the ‘world’ picking Texas to win at home. Clearly the Bulldogs haven’t had many games where they’ve been underdogs. Maybe that provided some extra motivation. Presumably Georgia was going to be up regardless to play the team ranked 1st overall entering yesterday. What’s interesting to me, is that Georgia controlled the game (up 23-0 at halftime) with Carson Beck having 0 TD’s, and 3 picks. Texas was held to 29 rushing yards on 27 attempts. Beck’s turnovers were offset by the 3 fumbles lost by Quinn Ewers, and Arch Manning. Steve Sarkisian made clear after the game that Ewers is going to remain the starter.
Miami 52 Louisville 45 – A fun back and forth game at Louisville. Miami hit the 50 point mark for the fourth time this year. This was also the third straight week they’ve allowed at-least 34 points. Cam Ward and the Hurricanes were 9 of 15 on 3rd down.
Tennessee 24 Alabama 17 – Only 314 total yards for Alabama, as the Tide was 3 of 14 on 3rd down. We said before the game that the loser here was going to have little margin for error going forward. Bama will need to run the table, with Missouri, @ LSU, @ Oklahoma, and Auburn left on their schedule. Way too many penalties for Bama.
LSU 34 Arkansas 10 – An impressive showing for Brian Kelly’s Tigers. LSU is now 6-1 overall, and 3-0 in the SEC. They’re in good position, and running a bit under the radar. LSU had 3 sacks, and held the Razorbacks to 38 yards on the ground.
Iowa State 38 Central Florida 35 – UCF had 354 yards rushing, with 4 TD’s, and lost! The Cyclones did hold UCF QB Jacurri Brown to 8 completions for 62 yards.
Clemson 48 Virginia 31 – Clemson gets to 5-0 in league play, as they put up 540 yards of offense. Clemson dominated the ball (34 minutes of possession), and was 9 of 15 on 3rd. The Tigers have put up 40+ points in 5 of their last 6 games.
Notre Dame 31 Georgia Tech 13 – A workman like performance for the Irish against a solid Yellow Jackets team.
Texas A&M 34 Mississippi State 24 – The Aggies are now 6-1 overall, and 4-0 in the SEC. The only loss for A&M being 23-13 vs. Notre Dame in the opener.
Indiana 56 Nebraska 7 – The Hoosiers have scored at-least 41 points in each of their last 6 games. Nebraska was 5-1 entering yesterday, and they were totally demolished allowing 495 yards of offense, and 24 first downs.
Kansas State 45 West Virginia 18 – The Wildcats dominated the Mountaineers in Morgantown. K-State now 6-1 overall, 3-1 in Big 12 play.
Missouri 21 Auburn 17 – Just 82 yards rushing for Missouri, but the did have 6 players with at-least 2 receptions. Missouri had to outscore the Auburn 15-0 in the 4th to win.
SMU 40 Stanford – Classic ACC match-up here. SMU is undefeated in ACC play at 3-0. The Mustangs had 506 yards of offense, and held Stanford to 206 yards. SMU also had 6 sacks. SMU’s lone loss was 3 point game (18-15) to BYU.
Illinois 21 Michigan 7 – The Fighting Illini move to 6-1 overall, 3-1 in league play. Defending National Champion Michigan is going to fall out of the Top 25. Illinois only had 80 yards passing.
Army 45 East Carolina 28 – The Black Knights are 7-0 overall, 6-0 in the AAC. They had 295 yards rushing, with QB Bryson Daily leading the way with 171. He also had 147 yards in the air over 10 attempts.
Navy 51 Charlotte 17 – The Midshipman are 6-0 overall, 4-0 in the the AAC. 4 sacks for the Navy defense. Biff Poggi’s 49ers fell to 3-4 overall, 2-1 in the AAC.
Week 9 Games Of Note
Syracuse at Pittsburgh – The 5-1 Orange head to Pittsburgh to face the 6-0 Panthers.
Boise State at UNLV – Both teams with just 1 loss, and both teams undefeated in Mountain West conference play.
Notre Dame vs. Navy (Metlife Stadium, NY) – ESPN’s Match-up Predictor is giving Navy a 8.9% chance of pulling the upset.
Washington at Indiana – Hoosiers QB Kurtis Rourke is likely out of this game with a thumb injury.
Oklahoma at Ole Miss – The Sooners are 1-3 in their new conference. The Rebels have 2 losses, and not afford a 3rd.
Illinois at Oregon – ESPN’s Match-up Predictor gives Illinois an 8.5% chance of winning.
Missouri at Alabama – 2 loss Alabama hosts 6-1 Missouri.
Penn State at Wisconsin – Wisconsin is now 3-1 in Big Ten play. Night game at Camp Randall.
LSU at Texas A&M – Both teams are 6-1, both teams are undefeated in SEC play. ESPN’s Match-Up Predictor giving A&M a 52.7% chance of winning at home.
