Fifteen days away. In just over two weeks, the unofficial start to the new league year will commence. Until then, teams are in draft meetings, the last rounds of tape are being watched, and final rankings are being meticulously sorted.
Predicting the correct order of an NFL Draft is a crapshoot. If you can correctly guess even the Top 5, you’ve accomplished something. Any kind of accuracy approaching 20 percent—in just first round, even—is incredible. And of course, it gets exponentially more difficult and confusing from there. Even if every single team had the exact same rankings, their current rosters and contractual bandwidth are all different. Therefore, their selection strategy will also be different.
Trades will happen. Teams will reach for quarterbacks. Really good, Pro Bowl-caliber players will fall to playoff teams, and one or two shockers will be announced on Thursday night April 24th.
That said, there is a general consensus of the Top 50 players or so, which helps people get somewhat of a grasp on who will be selected in Rounds 1 (Picks 1-32) and 2 (Picks 33-64).
As far as trades go, a team may trade to purposely pick a player ahead of a team they know wants him also, even if that player isn’t as big of a need for them as another position. A team may also trade up or back based on how closely they feel they are to contending for a championship.
Whatever happens, one thing is for sure: it’ll be fascinating. I can’t wait, so I made my own 2 round mock draft (trades and all). Enjoy!
