This does not change much in the near-term, as Hernandez had already replaced Uehara in the rotation – but there are some longer-term ramifications.
Hernandez now is assured of a longer-term audition with the O’s.
Without Uehara coming back in a couple of weeks, the Orioles would have to look towards other internal options if they wanted to replace either Berken or Hill.
If Uehara is able to return to the team in September, it is possible that he could receive a start or two; but I think that is unlikely.
If he is able to pitch in September, it seems to me that the O’s would likely want to see Uehara pitching out of the bullpen; in a role he is more likley to occupy with the Orioles in 2010.
