A pitcher might lose 1-0, and win giving-up 6 runs over 5.1 innings.
These things happen during a season, as the Baseball Gods have a way of evening things out.
Another example of that occurred today with Baltimore’s 6-5 loss to Boston.
The O’s won a game last-night that they had no business winning, and they lost a game today that the had no business losing.
I will not kill Trembley for taking out Bergesen to start the 9th. He had pitched 103 pitches, and the bottom-line is that Johnson and Sherrill have to get 3 outs before they allow Boston to score 4 and tie the game.
While I will not kill Trembley for that, I do have to question some of the decisions made in the extra-innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, tied at 5 – why would you bat Zaun, and Andino with Wieters, Jones, Salazar, and Mora on the bench?
In the bottom of the 11th, why bat Pie? Yes, Pie had seen Papelbon the night before, and is lefty… but you should not leave bullets in the chamber.
It is a deflating loss, but it will be history by tomorrow night in LA.
The O’s lost a game they should have won, but that is how things go. You won a game that you should have lost the night before. Things even-out over time.
I could dwell on the defeat, but instead I am going to concentrate on the positives shown out of Bergesen.
8 innings, 4 hits, 1 er, 0 bb’s, with 6 k’s in his debut against the RedSox. It was a 7th consecutive start of at least 6 innings of work.
The fact that Bergesen is held at a lower-esteem vs our premier pitching prospects, makes it very encouraging to see him capable of pitching like that against the best.
