The Baltimore Orioles lost 3-1 in Boston last night, when a late-rally fell short.
While dissapointed that the O’s were not able to squeeze across two or more runs against Papelbon in the 9th; I was happy to see some of the Oriole youth step-up for the challenge.
Rookies Brad Bergesen, Nolan Reimold, and Matt Wieters all made their initial apperance at Fenway.
Bergesen battled without his best-stuff, and kept the O’s in the game. In 6 innings, he allowed 9 hits, 3 er, 3 bb’s, with 5 k’s.
Reimold was 3 for 3, with a walk. He doubled, he stole a base, and he scored the O’s lone-run.
Wieters was 1 for 3, and held on to make a great play at the plate when Markakis gunned down Ellsbury.
Getting past the rookies, Markakis had 2 hits (including one in the 9th) and the assist. Jones did his job in the 9th, getting a hit off of Papelbon and reaching base.
Matt Albers had a strong scoreless inning of relief, with 2 k’s.
At the end of the day, what matters is wins and losses, and last-night the O’s lost. Still, there were things to take from the game which illuminate why better days are ahead.
