Obviously if Jones is going to miss the next 2-3 weeks, there is little reason to have him come-back to end the year.
Certainly disappointing that he would miss these last 30 games, but in the end it matters little. Jones received another 400+ at-bats this year, and improved on his 2008 rookie year.
He can spend the winter again getting healthy, and refocusing on what made him so successful in April and May of this year, and what caused him to struggle as the season progressed.
