Steve Goins was held out of today’s scrimmage, again bringing up questions about his ability to contribute.

Even after off-season knee surgery, the knee continues to give him issues.

Inside MD Sports (www.insidemdsports.com) quoted Gary Williams as saying, “Every time he’s tried to play—last week when he played—every time he’s tried to play it’s puffed up on him. They drained it last week. It just might be a bad knee, I don’t know. I’m not a doctor,” Williams said. He added that Goins will see a doctor again tomorrow and they’ll confer with the doctors in Chicago who performed his surgery. “Something’s not right,” Williams said. “We can really use him out there too.”

A lot of people will look at this as a complete non-issue, but that is inaccurate. If he is healthy (and improved enough) to give you 5-8 minutes a game as a reserve, that can change how Coach Williams uses Jordan Williams, James Padgett, and Dino Gregory. Meaning how you handle the minutes and fouls of those three players, changes a bit if you know you have another option existing behind them.

With the 2009-10 roster already dealing with the loss of Jerome Burney, the depth would be limited if Goins can not help. Additionally, if you were to lose one of Gregory, Williams, or Padgett to foul-trouble, or injury; it sure would be nice that a few minutes and fouls were available with Goins.
