Baltimore Metro High School Basketball Report January 31st

BCL / MIAA A 

Mt St Joe has entered the Max Preps Top 25, debuting at #22 last week, and are one of five teams mentioned that were considered that ranked just outside of the USA Today’s Top 25 national rankings. The Gaels have won eight straight games and are 24-3 overall. Coach Pat Clatchey can match former St Maria Goretti coach Cokey Robertson for third on Maryland high school boys basketball wins list if the Gaels can sweep their three games this week. 

The Gaels remained deadlocked with St Maria Goretti in the loss column atop the BCL standings with one, though the Gaels from Irvington hold a one game edge in the win column over the Gaels from Hagerstown in league play, with St Joe at 9-1, and Goretti at 8-1.  St Joe will have to wait another two weeks to avenge their lone league loss, when they host Goretti on the 15th. Goretti is 20-4 overall, following an 18-14 season a year ago.  

St Frances (18-8) is a game back of both of the Gaels teams in the BCL loss column, after losing in Hagerstown to Goretti on Monday, 85-77. The Panthers held a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter before succumbing to the Gaels, evening their two game league series this season. The Panthers Carlton Carrington poured in 43 points in the loss. Carrington followed that with 34 points in the Panthers 81-55 win over McDonogh on Wednesday.   

With Spalding losing for a second time to Loyola on Friday, and Mount Carmel pulling out a 70-68 win over John Carroll that night, the Cougars moved to fourth place in the BCL standings, at 5-6 in league play, while the Cavaliers slid to fifth in the eight team league at 4-6. Both Spalding and Mount Carmel look to be the top contenders to Mt St Joe in the MIAA Red division, while St Frances sees less resistance in the MIAA Black division. St Frances hosts Mt Carmel on Monday, while Mt St Joe hosts Spalding.  

MIAA B 

St Mary’s (15-6) remains unbeaten in league play in the MIAA division, holding a three game lead over Chapelgate Christian (17-5) after the Saints held off the Yellowjackets, 54-52, on Monday, all but sealing up the regular season crown after topping the Jackets, 64-54, in early December.

Baltimore City 

City College remained undefeated and sits at 16-0, tied in the city’s Division II with both Dunbar and defending state champion Lake Clifton. The unbeaten Black Knights go to Dunbar a week from Tuesday, then host Lake Clifton the following Tuesday. Lake Clifton (13-3) hosts Dunbar (14-2) this Friday night, providing another edition to the legendary rivalry.  

The Poets were impressive in a 69-60 home victory over Edmondson on Wednesday night, posting their most impressive win of the season. Senior guard Otis Toney led the Poets with 24 points, while senior forward Tony Hart added 19 points. The Poets hit 24 of their 27 free throw attempts. Before the Poets head to Lake Clifton on Friday, they travel to Poly to meet the 12-2 Engineers to open the week on Monday.  

Edmondson holds a one game advantage in the city’s Division I, following the Red Storm’s sound 71-53 win over then 1-loss Poly (11-2) on Friday night. A day after suffering the loss at Dunbar, coach Darnell Dantzler’s Storm responded, led by his sophomore son DJ, a transfer from St Frances, who poured in 31 points in the victory over the Engineers.  

Baltimore County 

Parkville (16-0) has taken the #1 ranking in the MPSSAA Top 50, with previously undefeated Wise losing by three points last week at Bowie. The Knights have won 40 of their last 41 games, and have outscored their opponents this season by an average of 30.4 points per game, second-best in the MPSSAA. The Knights travel to meet a hot Loch Raven team on Wednesday, with the 9-5 Raiders having won their last eight games, after starting the season 1-5. Amidst the streak, the Raiders upset Dulaney, 57-46, on the Lions home court.  

New Town (14-2) won their ninth straight game in their 58-52 victory over Dover DE on Saturday. The Titans are a week away from a matchup with Dulaney on the road, and two-plus weeks from their regular season showdown with currently undefeated Parkville. Dulaney (12-4) goes to Pikesville (12-3) on Wednesday, in a battle of two of the best five teams of the county. Hereford (12-3), who has won five straight games, has two tests this week, traveling to Milford Mill on Wednesday, and hosting 9-5 Loch Raven on Friday. 

UCBAC 

CM Wright (13-3) carries a nine game winning streak into their showdown with Aberdeen (13-4) on Tuesday night, four weeks after the Mustangs held home court and topped the Eagles, 63-58, in their first meeting of the season. The Mustangs start four sophomores and a junior, with sophomore Jordan Ross leading the team in scoring, at 14.5 points per game, and sophomore center Dylan Sander leading the team in rebounding, at 8.7 per clip, and ranking second in scoring, at 11.5 per game. Aberdeen’s Dylan Bass ranks among the top ten in the MPSSAA in scoring, at 23.2 points per game, and has connected on 42 of 105 (40%) three-point attempts.  

Anne Arundel 

Meade (16-1) won its 11th straight game on Saturday, but not before receiving a scare from winless Annapolis Area Christian Academy (0-15), erasing a fourth quarter deficit and pulling out a 77-74 win. Xavion Robertson scored a team-high 23 points in the victory. Broadneck (12-4), who has won ten straight games, and is vying for a county title with one league loss, travels to Northeast (13-4) on Tuesday, and hosts first place Meade seven days later.  

Howard 

Long Reach (12-2) and Wilde Lake (12-3) sit atop the standings in Howard County, with both holding two league losses. The Lightning go on the road to Atholton (7-7) on Monday, with the Raiders sitting just one game back of both the Bolts and Wildecats in the loss column in the league standings. Then, Atholton hosts Reservoir (10-3) on Wednesday, with the Gators joining both the Raiders and River Hill with three league losses, a game behind the leaders. Reservoir hosts River Hill (10-6) on Friday. Reservoir’s Zach Chin exploded for 40 points in the Gators 83-55 win over Howard on Friday night.  

Carroll 

Liberty (14-3) has all but sewed up the Carroll County title, with the Lions having swept second place Manchester Valley (8-6) already, and three games ahead of third place Century (12-4). Man’ Valley heads to Century on Tuesday.
