MIAA A

Spalding looks to be in a class of their own in the MIAA A Conference. A step above Mt St Joe, Calvert Hall, and McDonogh, and giant steps ahead of Pallotti and Gilman. The Cavaliers crushed Gilman, 47-3, Friday night, amassing 448 yards of offense, and limiting the Greyhounds to 22 yards rushing. The Cavaliers converted 9 of their 14 third and fourth down attempts, while senior quarterback Nick Gutierrez and freshman quarterback Malik Washington combined to hit on 17 of 29 passing attempts for 265 yards and four touchdown passes. The Cavs built a 33-3 halftime lead, with Gutierrez throwing a pair of scored to Jordan Pennick, Gutierrez and Jordan Harris running for scores, and Cory Butts hitting a pair of field goals. In the second half, the Cavs gave the ball to the freshman Washington, who threw 9-12 for 139 yards and two touchdowns. 

The Cavaliers host second place Mt St Joe on November 5th, with the regular season league title on the line, as well as the 1 seed in the conference tournament a week later. The Cavs have won all four of their league games by double-digits, while the Gaels are coming off an impressive 24-14 win over then 1 loss Calvert Hall. The winner of the regular season finale will likely play McDonogh in the conference semifinals; while the loser will host Calvert Hall. 

Mt St Joe took advantage of two Calvert Hall first half turnovers to help propel the Gaels to a 21-0 halftime lead of their Homecoming, cruising to a 24-14 win. After a Cardinals fumble on their own 45 late in the first quarter, the Gaels Bryce Cox ran it in from six yards to put the first points on the board. After a Cardinals drive that stalled just inside of Gaels territory, Winston Watkins connected with Trey Goodridge on a 45 yard pass play to set up the Gaels second touchdown. On the next possession, the Gaels Charles Wilson jumped a Cardinals route and picked off Noah Brannock at the Cards 27 yard line.  A few plays later, Watkins found Goodridge down the middle for a score to give the Gaels a 21-0 lead. Trailing 24-0 after three quarters, the Cardinals scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to cut the margin to ten.

MIAA B

In the MIAA B Conference, Concordia Prep took control of the top spot in the league with a 23-17 win over St. Mary’s in a battle of first place teams. The Saints of St Mary’s vaulted to a 17-0 first half lead on the Saints of Concordia Prep, before Prep scored 23 unanswered points to take the victory. Prep cut their deficit to 14 with a field goal just before half, and then tied the score at 17 after two touchdowns on their first two drives of the second half. Jaedon Alston’s second touchdown after intermission gave Prep a 23-17 lead midway through the fourth quarter, and the Saints of Concordia held on with big plays from their ‘front seven’ to secure the victory. Prep stands at 5-0 in league play, while St Mary’s and Loyola sit a game back at 4-1. Prep travels to Loyola on November 6th, where the Dons have an opportunity to grab a share of the league’s regular season title. If the Dons were to win, St Mary’s could also grab a share of the regular season title with a win over the winless Severn School. 

St Frances

St Frances (5-1), who had an off week, currently ranks #15 in the USA Today national rankings, and #16 in the Max Preps rankings. 

Anne Arundel County

In an Anne Arundel County battle with a county championship on the line, Broadneck engineered a domineering comeback for a second week in a row to all but sew up their third county championship in four seasons in a 41-25 victory over Old Mill, snapping the Patriots five game winning streak. In a shootout featuring the county’s top two passers, Broadneck’s Joshua Erllich put the Bruins on the board on their first possession following a pair of nice runs. Then, the Patriots Myles Fulton engineered three scoring drives, giving the Millersville visitors a 17-7 lead, a margin that appeared to be taken into intermission, before Erlich provided heroics again. 

Last week, the Bruins were deadlocked with Severna Park at intermission in a 14-14 tie, before Erlich directed his troops to 34 second half points in the Bruins 48-14 win. This week, Erlich didn’t wait until the second half to engineer a comeback. Following a crucial interception by Jalen Carter late in the second quarter, Erlich found Nathan Livicki on a 19 yard touchdown pass as time expired in the first half, cutting the Bruins deficit to three, 17-14. On the first drive of the second half, Erlich ran it in from nine yards out to regain the lead for the Bruins, 21-17. After an Old Mill punt, Erlich found Levicki for a 17 yard score to give the hosts a 28–17 lead midway through the third quarter, and the Patriots never again came within a score of the Bruins. 

Erlich hit on 14 of 19 passes for 155 yards and three scores, and added a career-high 110 rushing yards and a pair of scores on 18 carries for the Bruins. Erlich pushed his MPSSAA all-time second-best career passing touchdowns total to 87, and passed former Arundel quarterback Nick Elko for fifth on the MPSSAA’s career completions list, with 464. Erlich is seven passing yards from passing former Northern quarterback Reese Crounse’s career mark of 6,350 for tenth on that list. In 33 career games for the Bruins, Erlich has accounted for 106 touchdowns and 7,785 yards through the air and on the ground. 

The Bruins Adrian Davis rushed for 155 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries for the well balanced Bruins. The Patriots Fulton completed 14 of 23 attempts for 183 yards and two touchdowns, maintaining his top spot in the county in passing yards (1,958) and completions (127) on the season, and trailing Erlich by one passing touchdown, with 19. 

Howard County

The HoCo county race has gone ‘loco’. Following Atholton’s 7-6 win over Long Reach, and Oakland Mills score with nine seconds to play to break a scoreless tie with River Hill, the county standings have a four-way tie for first place heading into the regular season’s finales. Never before has there ever been a four way tie atop the standings in the second half of the season, and only once before has their been four teams within a game of each other in the back half of the season. During Wilde Lake’s first (of six) state championship season in 1985, the Wildecats shared the county title with Glenelg at 6-1, with Atholton and Hammond finishing a game back at 5-2. 

This season, very little has separated the top quartet of teams in the county in the four games played between them. Two were decided by one point, another by two, and the other saw the eventual loser driving down the field late in the fourth quarter on a potential game-leading drive, before fumbling. All four games between the four have come down to the final minutes, including Friday night’s edition, with Altholton holding on to a 7-6 win, handing Long Reach their first loss. A missed extra point by the Lightning proved decisive. 

Oakland Mills handed Atholton its only loss, as the Scorpions held off the Raiders potential last-minute go ahead drive in their 26-20 win. Glenelg dealt Oakland Mills their only loss, after the Scorps squandered their own late, potential go ahead drive in the final minutes, fumbling the ball, before the Gladiators added an insurance score in their 20-8 win. Atholton gave Glenelg their only loss, in a two point, 26-24 affair. In addition, all four teams have had similar results with  the county’s fifth best team – River Hill, with Oakland Mills 6-0 win over the Hawks, the Lightning and Raiders posting identical 14-7 victories over the four-time state champs, and Glenelg going one score better in a 21-7 win. Even, Steven. 

Provided the Scorpions and Lightning’s game isn’t ‘even Steven’ next Friday, the winner will grab a share of the county title, at least. Oakland Mills hasn’t won a county title since 2000, and the Lightning won their only share of a county title in 2005. Atholton hosts Mt Hebron, and Glenelg hosts Reservoir, as both vie for their share of a county title. Atholton last won a county title in 2011, while the Gladiators were undefeated county champions in their 2018 state runner-up season. 

Friday night, Bisi Owens of Glenelg became the ninth different player in county history to rush for 300 yards in a game, as he amassed 338 yards and five touchdowns on 19 carries in the Gladiators 56-24 win over Marriotts Ridge. Owens’ total ranks as the third highest total in county history, and the highest of the four Gladiators on the ‘300’ list. In addition, Owens hit on all three of his pass attempts for 95 yards and another score. In all, Owens accounted for 433 yards and six touchdowns. Bisi’s brother Wande, now at Yale, is the county’s all-time leading rusher, and second all-time leading rusher in MPSSAA history, trailing former Dunbar Poet and current NFL receiver, Tavon Austin. On the year, Owens has rushed for 1238 yards and 23 touchdowns, and passed for 635 yards and eight touchdowns, accounting 1,873 yards and 31 touchdowns through eight games.

Here are the ten 300 yard rushing performances in county history. Korey Singleton of Oakland Mills is the only runner in county history to achieve the honor twice.

For just the second time in 20 seasons, the River Hill Hawks are enduring a three game losing streak, after Oakland Mills scored a touchdown with nine seconds to play on Friday night, breaking a scoreless tie. In 2014, the Hawks closed the regular season with three straight losses, before securing a win the regional semifinal. Two weeks ago, Atholton broke a 7-7 tie with the Hawks on a game-winning score with two minutes remaining, and last week, Glenelg took a hard fought victory over the Hawks, who were missing four of their five captains due to injury. All three of those opponents are in a four-way tie for first place in the county standings, and the Hawks came within a possession of the fourth, Long Reach, losing 14-7 in week one. While the Hawks defense has been stout (8.5 PA per game), their offense has been all but invisible, not scoring more than seven points against any of the four league leaders, and averaging scoring 13.5 points per game, their lowest average since the turn of the century. Coach Brian Can Deusen has a better than not shot to notch his 201st victory this Friday night, as the Hawks host the 1-6 Hammond Golden Bears. 

Marriotts Ridge found something to cheer about on Friday, although it wasn’t their first victory of the season. Mustangs senior receiver Stevie Jackson registered an all-time county best with 15 receptions in the ‘Stangs 56-24 loss to Glenelg, snapping Oakland Mills’ Tre Hopkins single game mark of 13 receptions, set in the Scorpions 2014 playoff loss to Patuxent. Jackson totaled 253 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns – two touchdown receptions, and a kickoff returned to ‘the house’. On the season, Jackson has 58 receptions for 569 yards and five touchdown receptions. Jackson is just eight catches away from recording the second most amount of receptions in a season in county history, which would snap Hopkins second best mark of 65 set in 2014. 

Baltimore City

Mervo (5-1) is quietly putting together another successful season, despite the death of one of their players, and despite having played just six games. The Mustangs are 5-1, with their only loss coming to Dunbar, 48-46, in overtime, after blowing a 16 point lead in the final three minutes of regulation. It could be expected, as the ‘Stangs lost receiver Elijah Gorham to a serious head injury, and was taken by ambulance from the field. Twenty-four days later, Gorham passed away in the hospital. The Mustangs are honoring Gorham as they begin their pursuit of their first state championship in their program’s history. The Mustangs have outscored their five opponents not named Dunbar, 197-6. 

Baltimore County

Dundalk is one win away from finishing with their first undefeated regular season in its school history. Twice before the Owls were 8-0, before suffering their first loss in one of the last two weeks of the season. In 1990, the Owls were 8-0 before losing in week nine, and were 9-0 in 2015 before losing to Franklin, 37-18, in the regular season finale. Two weeks later, the Owls got ‘get back’, and bounced the Indians from the playoffs in the regional final. 

This year’s Owls is led by its defense, which is allowing just 5.8 points per game. Linebackers Kamar Watson and Abdullah Sargaent headline the unit, with Watson registering 48 tackles, eight tackles for loss, five sacks, and two forced fumbles, and Sargaent recording 44 tackles, nine tackles for loss, four sacks, and three interceptions. Offensively, running back Jordan Fiorenza is averaging 109. 8 rushing yards per game, and has scored 13 touchdowns. 

Milford Mill has won seven straight games since their 19-14 opening week loss to rival Franklin. Since, the Millers have outscored their seven opponents, 279-42. 

UBAC

Harford Tech (7-0) appears to be heading to a UCBAC league title for just the second time in their program’s history. Friday night, Kelvin Mendez pulled several furlongs ahead of all leading runners in the MPSSAA rushing yards race, amassing 324 yards and four touchdowns on the ground in the Cobras 48-8 thrashing of North Harford. He and his brother Kevin accounted for all seven of the Cobras touchdowns. In just six games played, which is two games less than just about everyone else, leads the MPSSAA in rushing yards, with 1,462, and leads the MPSSAA in rushing yards by a far greater margin, at 243.7 per game. 

Fallston’s aerial assault features the MPSSAA’s passing leader in yards (2,043) and touchdowns (22) – junior Aiden Nixon, and the MPSSAA’s receiving yards leader (1,045) – senior Dylan Wheeler. The Cougars are 8-0 and scoring a MPSSAA best 49.9 points per game. 

Carroll County

South Carroll is 8-0 and poised to capture their first league title since 2015, when the Cavaliers grabbed the MVAL Chesapeake Division. 

Westminster has won four straight games, after losing their first four games. The Owls opened the season with games versus four straight MPSSAA Top 50 opponents – South River, Linganore, South Carroll, and Dundalk. Aside from a blowout loss to Linganore, the Owls lost a one point decision to South River in the opener, lost by nine to South Carroll, and lost by a point to #7 Dundalk. Granted, the Owls aren’t blowing teams away, with three victories in the four game streak decided by one possession – a one point in overtime at Francis Scott Key, a three point win over Manchester Valley, and Friday night’s six point win over Liberty.
