My preference would have been a 3 year deal, or a 4 year deal that rewrote 2009…
However, if it takes 4 years past 2009, to retain him, I can live with it.
A 4 year contract to Roberts, at his age, carries risk.
To me though, that risk is livable if you want to contend in 2010, and 2011.
After 2009, you face the prospect of having to replace Huff at 1st, Mora at 3rd, and still needing a long-term option at SS to replace Izturis (signed through 2010).
Replacing 1st, 3rd, and SS while also having to address 2nd, and have hopes of contention, borders on the unlikely.
With Roberts in the fold long-term, it will be another sign to the common fan, and baseball in general of the O’s taking positive steps forward as a franchise.
